My one year old Merc opti petered out today on a guide trip. Bought this boat one year ago from Advantage Marine, had the yearly maint. done in Nov.,that cost me over 500.00 bucks and now it won't run over 10mph. I heard rumors that they had problems with the coil packs, but ignored that until today. All I know is that I am PO'D. This should not be happening to a year old motor. I will be letting Mercury Marine know how I feel about this along with others! I am loosing money guiding while the boat is out of order. What a joke the way things are made these days. I am not a happy camper! Any one know a good merc. mechanic in Austin?

I'd be pi$$ed too Kevin. Surely they will get it fixed quick with your livelihood depending on it. Dang the luck!

5 year warranty, so they told me, uh, sold me. Guess I should have stuck with Evinrude motors. Have had good luck with them, this was my first merc. and probably my last.

I would contact Mercury Marine. That is unexceptable. Especially being a guide and knowing how to handle boats and engines. If you are diligent I bet either the place you bought it from or Mercury will work with you to get that engine fixed.

Sorry about that Kevin. I have the 2nd Merc I ever owned, use to never would get one and the first one I got was a 200 in 1996 and that thing wouldn't push my boat up the trailer if it stopped on the way up. Now low end, but would run fast top. I traded it back to them in 1999 for a Yammer and that 200 Yammer was great.
I now have a Merc 4 Stroke 115 and pray it keep it's end of the bargain.
Back in 99 I had an old friend that had his master mechanics license for many of the bran name motors (Merc, Johnson, Evinrude, Yamaha and maybe one other) and he gave a great rec on the Yammer, but don't know if it's still his choice now.
Good luck, Skip

That sucks...What does the dealer you bought the boat from say about that?...Maybe take it to another authorized dealer if you can't get satisfaction...Mercury has to stand behind that...Good luck...

It's not the dealer's fault....I have a 3-year old Mercury 115 Opti (still under warranty) that's had over $7K of warranty work done on it so far. The last major hit was a new powerhead. It took about a month for Mercury to get the powerhead to the dealer. That was the last straw for Mercury in my mind.
This is the first Mercury I've ever owned and it will be the last even though Tommy Yetts and his staff at Rockwall Marine has basically brought it back to life. Once this motor warranty runs out, I will be buying a Yamaha 4-stroke to replace it.
With the history this Mercury motor has, I'd be better off parting it out rather than going for trade-in value.

Naw, it's not the dealers fault, and who knows what's wrong with it. I just had to vent a little yesterday. The problem with the dealer is that he is 200 miles away. I'll have to see if I can get it fixed locally. It just seems like when you bring them in, it takes forever for them to get it out. I may have to borrow my fishing partners boat for guide trips until I get it back(it's my old boat anyway). Thanks all for the well wishes about getting it fixed. Darrell, you crack me up, that was funny stuff about it being wore out!

Sorry you are having trouble so soon and just after maintenance.
Find the fouled plug and replace that coil. I just had one go out on my Optimax, I have had it 4 years. Tracker at Bass Pro can order the coil, or you might call around and find it sooner than BPS can get it, $98.

Remember the old days. When you could buy an outboard that would last 50 years. You just cant beat an old omc.
