Well I had a very special trip today.. I guess theres no reason I can't spill it.. If there is oh well smile
I had Lynn Burkhead in the boat today. Lynn is the outdorr writer for ESPN outdoors and does the Outdoor writing for the Sherman Newspaper
(I think) and also freelance writes for other outdoor publications. Anyway he had met Mark while Mark was doing a fishing seminar for a Fly fishing club that Lynn belongs to. I guess the way it went is that Lynn asked for help in writing an artical about Striper fishing on Texoma. We were going to try and get Mark and Myself along with Lynn in my boat to do this trip but Mark got too busy and couldnt join us during the week. As I looked at the weather forecasts I told Lynn last night that it looked like today early was going to be the only window of non hurricane winds until the weekend. Lynn's deadline for his story is Friday so we decided to make it happen today.
So at 7:30 Lynn and I went out to try and get him his story along with a bunch of Pictures. I originally thought that Lynn wanted to fish but as we pulled into our first stop I tell Lynn what to do and he says "No" Im here just to take pics... So he wanted me to do all the catching and he needed to get some good pics.
I gotta tell ya ,I was stressing a little about this today.. knowing that I really really needed to get on some good fish... We wanted BIG fish pics..
On my first stop I pulled a fish on the first cast.. bout a 16 incher.. Moved about 100 yards and within minutes pulled 4 more this time all 24 inchers... At this point we've only been out about 30 minutes and I'm starting to get a little relieved No real big-uns yet but at least were catching !! We moved around 6-8 times and everywhere we went we got fish.. Everything today came on reaxtion sassy's. Finally bout Noon after getting tons of pics Lynn finally started to fish himself and he landed about 5-6 fish in the last hour before we called it a day, For the day I probably caught 20-25 fish including Lynn's 6 all of which were released except for 4 that we cleaned for Lynn to take home.
We never did get the big dog we were looking for but did land numerous fish in the 7-9 lb range
Out of the 25 or so fish only 4 were under 20 inches !!
man what a day and the best part was I got to do most of the fishing smile
Lots of birds working and we left birds a few times to find bigger fish cause under the birds were just those little pesky 24 inchers
aint it funny how spoiled we get.. thinking 24 inchers arent worth staying on We could have stayed on some of those fish longer and really loaded the boat but that wasnt our goal today..
I am real pleased that we had a great day and Lynn was able to get the story and pics he needed !! Mark.. Thanks for sending him my way !!
And Lynn who is an admitted Lurker so I know he's reading this... Your welcome back on my boat anytime !!!!
The fishing has really turned back on the last week !!

Good job, Jeff.

Will the pictures be published soon? I need to check out the backgrounds in them before Jan 28. smile Taking two 24 inchers to the weigh in might not win, but it would be respectable. smile

My flight from Kansas City flew over Texoma yesterday. Seeing Texoma from the air makes you realize just how big the lake really is. We were too high to tell a Bay Stealth from a Falcon, however. smile

I'll see you in a few days.

I laughed and said it really didnt matter.. cause thsoe fish would be gone by tomorrow anyway smile

JD,

You and Mark know how to get it done for stripers on Lake Texoma! Wow - what a day and what a photo shoot.

All stories will be out within the next couple of months. I'll let you know when the ESPNOutdoors.com and Texas Sporting Journal pieces are published.

Newspaper story should be w/in the next two weeks.

Again, thanks - you really got on the fish and hammered 'em to help me get some great photos to illustrate these stories with.

Now I've just got to figure out how to catch these big linesiders with my flod rod and kayak!

Tight lines,

Lynn Burkhead
