With my first grader on spring break, the three of us made the 5&1/2 hour drive from Texarkana to Lake Calcasieu last week. The Redfish were right where they were 3 weeks prior and we had no difficulty limiting out on slot fish from 22"- 27" inches. It was the crabbing , which I had never done before, that provided alot of the entertainment. The Crabhawks which are little spring loaded devices worked just fine. My boy thought they were great, but of the hundred or so crabs we brought home most were just pulled up with hook, weight and chicken neck on baitcast outfits. Drop five or six to the bottom and you are pulling up crabs almost continuously. It's suprising that there are so many crabs there considering you can legally keep 144 per person using this technique without any licence at all with no size limit. We managed to get all but 10 home alive and a big party was awaiting us when we arrived home Thursday night. Tell your friends you'll be having fresh crab and grilled Redfish and they will show up with plenty of refreshments. Even on a weekday!
