I was thinking about installing a K and N intake on my new chevy and was curious about the air sensor. Do the aftermarket intakes have a place to re-install this or do you have to drill a hole in the new one to allow it to go back on? Also for those of you who have installed one, did it make a noticeable difference in HP and gas mileage?
I am trying to squeeze as much gas mileage out of my new truck, my goal is 24mpg highway. My plans are the air intake, exhaust, throttle body spacer, computer tuner, and a tonneau cover. I have heard that the tonneau cover alone adds almost 10 percent, so that will be the bulk of it as its already rated at 21.

Personally I think all that is a waste of time and money. The cold air intake, tuner, exhaust, etc. only serves to add hp on the top end of the rpm range. If you're running the truck at 5500 rpm then you won't see good mpg numbers.

The bed cover will probably be the single thing that does the most for your mpg's.

I've also seen where folks used too much oil on their K&N filter after cleaning and fouled their sensors so bad that they had to replace them. Pain in the butt to pull the intake manifold to get to some of the sensors.

I used to pull trailers with a 1/2 ton gasser and tried all of the things that you suggest. I saw exactly NOTHING for my investment. Most gas engines are coming from the factory pretty well tuned already. Keep in mind that some tuners require you to run premium unleaded so any gains in mileage that you might see would be offset by the need for high grade fuel.

Just my experience. I'm sure somebody will chime in with different experiences.

I tried this in 2000 with a 5.3 liter chevy. Air intake, exhaust, air flow sensor, ect. I never saw any improvement even though every accessory was to improve milage.

Seems I remember the show Mythbusters running some tests to prove/disprove the tailgate up/down/off as well as covers on/off on a pickup bed to see what improved mileage. Weight reduction was the only way MPGs improved. They took the tailgate off. Might want to do some more research before spending a bunch of money.

Hey thanks for the input, I was a bit skeptical reading the reviews on the products so its good to get some input from people who have tried it. I am going to get a good base established with current MPG averages, add the tonneau cover first, see what it does, and go from there. I still want the performance gains from the rest, so if it doesnt live up to the MPG gains then at least I got something out of it all.

If you are running the programmer and intake on a Diesel I will assure you it is worth the time and money fuel mileage increase of 5 mpg on a 2007 Duramax and bottom end horse power will set you back in seat
It is real funny watching the face on people in a GT 5.0 mustang when 7000 lb truck blows them away

I think you are going to burn a hole in your pocket and get your standard warranty Voided.

I believe you are wasting money buying the cover to increase gas mileage. I have owned several and the only they do is keep your gear dry and out of sight from some low life. As long as I own a truck, it will have a cover but, not for mileage.

Hey Eddie, keep it stock and save your money! Max speed in Hawaii is only 55 MPH anyway and there's too many stop and go traffic to try and get better gas mileage anyway. Good to hear from you!

It's is def not a waste of time just the throttle body space4 being that it's fuel injected. Yes the k and n has a new spo for the sensor I did a cold air intake dual flowmaster super 40's and a superchips programmer 93 octane tune on my 08 dodge 1500 and went from 17 high way mpg to 22 and filling up with super only runs about 4-5 mors dollars to fill up with but the 87 octane tune sill improves power and gas mileage

Cold air isn't going to add much mpgs or hp. The only benefit is having a reusable filter.

Throttle body spacer is [censored]. You will not notice it being there at all.

If you are wanting to get anything out of exhaust, get long tube headers and go from there. Shorties and mid lengths suck. Your stock cats flow plenty good.

You will notice a computer tuner but, I wouldn't use one of the off the shelf ones you see in magazines and such. Get your exhaust first, then contact Nelson Performance , Black Bear Performance , Wheatley Performance Tuning , or PCMforless.com and get a custom tune.
