This is not something that most of us even consider till it is too late. Check how your insurance covers your trailer. If you have an accident on the highway, it may not make a difference, but if you have your trailer stolen then it is another matter.
Last year a fellow club member came back to the weigh-in of a tournament to find the trailer no longer attached to his truck. (the trailer still has not been found) Anyway, he turned it into his insurance and they only had it covered for somewhere around $3000. He found to his surprise that a new bass cat trailer would exceed $6000.
So I would suggest that all of you make a call to your insurance provider and check on their policy for how it would cover such a situation. Just thought I would let some of you learn from this guys misfortune.

Ok I got a question, maybe a dumb one, but supposedly the only dumb question is the one that you didn't ask! Anways, I use the master lock coupler lock, but what about locking the trailer to the hitch? I've got a Triton, and I looked for some way to actually lock the trailer to the hitch, once your hooked up. Am I just having wishful thinking, or am I totally missing a way to lock it to the truck?

Good info...Plano Marine told me what a new trailer would cost when I bought my boat so I could get the coverage right...also make sure your coverage for contents is enough to cover everything you have in the boat...

My trailer has a hole that a master lock will fit in to lock the trailer on the ball. It is where the cheap little pin slips in under the latch on the hitch.

Even if you lock your coupler to the the hitch ball, a thief will unscrew the ball from the hitch and still get your trailer. You can always tack weld the ball nut to the hitch.
You should also lock your safety chains to your hitch. Maybe with several locks to get through, the thief will move to another victim???
I was at Amistad this week and someone tried to break into my truck at the ramp. Door messed up from prying on it. They were unsuccessful fortunately but really made me stop and think about what would I do with boat in water but no way to get it home???? Hope I never have to find out!
