Most of my catfishing has been done in one place, with little practice of driftfishing.

My question is, when you drift, do yall try to use lighter weights and still use your baitclickers, or just try to watch your rod tips and use regular (ie heavy) weights?

thanks,

shane

When I drift I use a minimum of 1 1/2 oz, I want to make sure that bait stays on bottom. I do not use clickers, just watch the rods and even back the drag off a little bit.

I use the snag-free type weights in 2oz on a Santee-Cooper rig with circle hooks as well. I've tried it with and without reels disengauged with clickers on. If you have the reel engauged just make sure it wont come out of the rod holder if it snags or a big-un takes it. thumb

I usually drift without them but I used them on accident the last time I went and I had a fish running for a good minute and it must have taken the bait and ran all the way with the line because we weren't drifting fast enough for the drifting to ake it out. I wasn't used to it and finally the noise started getting on my nerves and I looked and it was taking out line so I clicked it, and just started reeling in, there was a five pound blue on it. I felt rather dumb for waiting that long. I had never used it before so I have a little bit of an excuse

have never used clickers drifting, wouldn't free spool with clicker engaged just empty the spool quickly ?? and leave bait stationary until spool emptied ?

I thought the same thing but no the clicker adds a little bit of drag when your freespooling. At least with the snag-free type weights it will do fine. If your using a bigger weight or not the non snag-free type you may let out some line. If your weight causes too much drag or snags on something it will definitely let line out but your clicker will let you know. You can just engauge your reel if it does.

didn't realize the clicker would hold enuff tension to drift. may try that next time, or as said above, just let the circle hooks do their job. fun is in the fight, not the hookset. hooked

That's a good point but I have decided recently that the only time I am going to use circles is when drifting, I Love settin the hook to much.
Tight Lines and Bent Poles!!!
