I was reading the worst lure thread and didnt want to steal it with my questions about swimbaits, I read all you guys talking about them and I know they are a BIG fish bait I am just a little intimidated by them and dont know how to use them. How does everyone fish them? do yall buy the hollow body ones or the pre hooked and weighted ones? How do you swim them? I know very little so tell me everything you know.
Thanks

About the only swim bait I have real confidence in is the Sebile magic swimmers. Other than that, I jsut have a bunch of pretty baits laying around.

fist thing to know ...even though its a bigger bait, this is a very suttle prsentation, you want to fish them in clear to mildly stained water. You want a very slow, steady retrieve, just enough to make the tail flap. You need min a 7'MH fast action rod.
If you want to fish them deep, the weighted ones work best like the storms. I would say these perform best in 12-30ft depths
for shallow 0-12ft, the hollow body rigged with a weighted swim bait hook is the best.
Swim baits are just a bigger version of a soft jerk bait like a senko or a fluke. Look at it the same and it makes sense......you just fish it a little differently but to reiterate.... this is a clear water presentation.

i fish with swimbaits alot on Rayburn and toledo. the key is to put the bait on and go fish. try anything you can think of. i catch bass on toledo jiging storm swimbaits. today i caught two five pounders on the strike king shadalicious in sexy shad rigged on a Booya Chatterbait. they slam it like that.

Hey Bud! That's a great question. For starters, swimbait fishing can be very intimidating. Five years ago there were not many out but now most tackle shops have not only walls of swimbaits but they have glass cases full of swimbaits with price tags as much as top of the line rods and reels. This is a technique that in order to be successful, you need to stick with it. Yes, there are many swimbaits designed for catching limits such as Paddle Tail swimbaits (Basstrix, Yum Money Minnow, Berkley Hollow Belly, Kamikaze baits just to name a few), Sebile magic swimmers, Bait Smith, 3:16 Lure Company Wake Baby and Matt Lure hard body blue gills. These baits are great for both size and numbers. On the other end swimbaits such 8" or bigger are for more trophy size fish. I would start with the smaller paddle tail's first. They are easy to fish and great for getting your confidence up. You can use any flipping stick you have for these baits. Pick yourself up some basstrix 6" paddle tails i any color you want. You can get them from tacklewarehouse.com if you want. Use 20lb fluorocarbon. Fish them anywhere you would fish a spinnerbait. Try these and let me know how you do. Once your confidence is up, move to the bigger soft bodied swimbaits and or the hard body swimbaits. I will attach a picture of a bass I caught on a basstrix swimbait. Good luck and God Bless!!!!

To me, more expensive isn't always better. I prefer soft plastic with a weighted worm hook, to a hard plastic swimmer with treble hooks.
