Everyone needs to check their policies. I posted this last year, and it's happened again.
For some reason, insurance agents don't know the cost of boat trailers. They just guess at the time they quote the price, and put $1000 or $1500 on most trailers they insure under boat policies.
An EZ Loader trailer for a new 20 Skeeter will run $5000 or more!
So before any of you guys get into accidents, call your agents and ask them how much coverage you have on your policy for your trailer! 70% of you guys here will find you've got either $1000 or $1500 in coverage! And that isn't going to be enough to replace your trailer in the event it gets totaled!

When I renew my policy I'm going to up the trailer coverage, that's for sure.

Do not wait till you renew, do it NOW. Procrastination will get you every time. It did me, even though I had $2500 I was going to raise to to $4500 and was too late. My agent was going to insure the trailer for a $1000, but I insisted on $2500, 2k too low.

As Don said, do it now. Waiting can cost you thousands. They will send you an adjusted bill, and it should only be $10 bucks a year or so difference in premiums.

I made sure when I bought mine and had State Farm insure it that the cost of the trailer was covered. They specifically asked the cost of the trailer. Mine was $3500 for my single axle Ranger Trail. Good advice.

My progressive policy does not have a limit for the trailer - just a total limit for the entire rig ex. my tackle, rods and reels (have a separate rider for those).
Good reminder Michael.

Hi Fiberglass, you make a great point, if agents make assumptions about trailer costs or other things then the buyer could over pay. Still, no one should boat without proper insurance. Some systems enable you to clearly state the value of what you want covered. For example, you can go on the www.policydog.com_ website and get a free instant quote on http://www.policydog.com/insurance/boat-insurance.aspx. You just answer some direct questions and get your quote. You can even __buy http://www.policydog.com/insurance/boat-insurance.aspx online__ if you like the price. It is also necessary to get liability protection, not just insure the equipment. What if you have an accident and hurt someone? Happy boating.

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

I made sure my Ranger trailer was covered for $6K, they are definitely expensive to replace!
