Most places have small weekly tourneys with low entry fees and normally the same bunch of guy's fishing every week. I fish 1-2 of these type tourneys in north dallas and they are great.. Fun fishing with good competion and a bunch of guys that are really great to hang out with..

Start small and move up.

Your best bet would be to join a club and once you build up a few friendships you'll find members looking to help you out if its a good club.
If a club is something you want to hold off on I'd say start off with those weekday event they have from 6pm until 9 or something like that. Don't go fishing those 150.00 events from the start.

I think you should start in a low entry fee, decent pay-out tournament. We hold a tournament series on Medina Lake starting April 16. The entry fee is $35, and you usually win about $200-$300 each individual tournament, and then if you fish at least half the tournaments you qualify for the championship, which pays out every single person just for showing up! The championship will pay about $500- $600 to win.
