All of us fish flukes at one time or another, my favorite way is weightless, tied directly to a 5/0 Mustad wide-gap hook #37177BLN, on 12 lb. flouro Seaguar or XPS. Using a 6'6" medium action rod with a 6:3/1 reel.

The good and bad about this rig is:
1) the line size and type - fluoro allows the fluke to stay sub-surface (mono floats the bait), 12 lb. allows the fluke to sink & twitch naturally; flouro is more likely to cut itself when backlashed or when hung up, 12 lb. breaks on hooksets occasionally.

2) The 5/0 hook - works as an excellent "keel" to keep the fluke from twisting, it also allows the bait to sink much like a senko style bait when at rest; however this size hook requires a fairly heavy hook-set to penetrate on a long cast contributing to break-offs.

3) the medium action rod - great for twitching, but not so great, once-again, on those long hooksets

Now the question, what would you change if anything with this rig?

Line - I use 20lb Seguar AbrazX
Hook - I use a 5/0 hook made especially for Sluggos (Sluggo brand hook found at Academy)
Rod - 7ft Med
Reel - Anything I can cast for distance (Revo SX current favorite)

You really should try the hooks. They've decreased my losses a bunch.

I have been using the lightly weighted (1/32) hooks made by Arkie. They are called Jerk and Stick Bait Heads. They look to be 3's or so and work good at keeping the nose of the fluke down. I think Wally World carries them.

If I remember correctly aren't the Sluggo hooks basically a "longshaft" offset round bend hook? Do you have problems with line twist from the fluke rolling while you work it? The wide-gap hook "hangs" low giving the keel effect. Just askin'?

Yep, they're long shank and they'll twist. But as far as I can tell, it hasn't kept the bass from biting and my bites to hookup ratio has gone WAY up with them. I also like the fact that they're mucho sharp out of the package.

One thing i would rec. is for this type of fishing, especially if you're making long casts. I would rec. using a braid, such as power pro, with a flouro leader, i use the vanish. The braid reduces the amount of stretch in the line on those long hooks sets, been using this set up, or straight braid with flukes for years with great success.

The problem I have with braid is when you need to get the fluke down 3 or 4 feet under the top, it takes forever to get there and is hard to keep there. If you're going to fish the fluke basically as a topwater, it's fine.

use a nail weight to get it down. 20 lb line, flourocarbon or mono, 5.o owner heavy hook.

I fish Super Flukes with one of several hooks.

I love the 4/0 Xpoint X49Z, as well as the Tx3 Point Wide Gap Worm Hooks in 4/0, or 5/0, Owner TWISTLOCK� 3X w/ CENTERING PIN in 5/0, or 6/0.

As far as line goes I use a good 100% fluorocarbon in 12 to 20 test. I�m especially fond of Sunline Shooter in 16, and 20 pound test. I�ll also use 8 to 12 pound P-Line CX Premium (Clear/Blue Florescent) if I want to use spinning gear, or if I want to reduce the fall rate. Normally in reducing the fall rate I�ll go with a light wire hook such as XPoint X15Z XGAP STYLE, BLACK NICKEL, LIGHT WIRE hook, generally in 4/0.

15 # seguar tatsu. 4/0 EWG with a small barrel swivle 10 inches up the line conntected to 12# big game. 7ft medium heavy falcon cara with a 7:1 revo premier.

I fish mine as a topwater most of the time. I'm using 50 lb. braid and the SK Z-too floaters. Even when using the 4/0 Mihachi hook with the built in "keeper" it will still float at rest or VERY slowly drop.I will put a swivel about 2' ft. up. This has been very successful for me but this year I plan on starting to go to conventional flukes also and work them down several feet.

Who remembers when the first Sluggo came out, or "Slimy Slug"?
Wow, that brings back some good times. It had to be in the late '80s early '90s. Man oh man I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I dont remember a time when I ever caught so many fish on a new lure as I did with that. To this day its still my number one go to bait(Fluke). Although the RattleSnake is the most diverse bait I have.

You have to try the Gamy hook with the welded ring at the eye to tie to. It's a 4-0 heavy wire I beleive. Short hook the nose so it leaves the ring exposed not burried in the nose. Now you can make the fluke turn completely around when twitching it. This hook gives it action you never saw before!

These are the bomb for flukes in water deeper that 3 or 4 feet.

I like using a 4/0 Mustad Mega Bite hook because I can txpose the hook and it is very weedless because the point of this hook angles a little downward toward the eyelet of the hook instead of straight toward it.

I would also use 15 pound fluorocarbon line instead of 12 and go to a M/H rod. I fish it around nasty cover that is why I would step up to the 15 and the m/h rod, or I even use braid at times.
