Fished last Friday afternoon with Texas Parks and Wildlife Biologist Mark Howell and son Andrew Howell. My nephew Patrick and my two sons also joined us on the trip. We fished PK even though the Golden Alga on PK I raging. We fished in the back of a creek because the fish are holding there. Fresh warm water attracts the fish to the backs of the creeks. Mark and I discussed the GA as we all fished.
It is hard to say exactly what is going to happen at PK . Most of the larger game fish have gone to the river or backs of the creeks where there is fresh water running in the lake. The fresh water dilutes the GA Toxin. There are lots of small cat fish and shad being impacted by the GA. The larger the fish the more mobile they are. Basically larger fish have more of a chance to swim for safety. I personally looked in Rock Creek, Bluff Creek, Kneelys Slew, Willow Beach, Scenic Point South, and Sky Camp by boat. There are a small number of game fish being impacted for now. More may float later. I was on or at PK for the last ten days. There is no need to be gloom and doom yet but..samples of water taken last week did have high levels of GA. The recent rains have helped. Come on sunshine.
Her some pics from our trip and a few others.

Man I hate to hear the golden algae is a problem again this year. Just when the lake was getting back to somewhere near what it once was. I was really looking forward to my trip out there next month. We will hope for the best. Maybe we will get lucky this time.

I sure hope the GA doesnt kill off all the sandies and stripers just as the lake is starting to produce good numbers of fish again. By the way those are some nice fish in those pics.

I stayed near Long Hollow for a few days last week and saw a few dead shad, one small dead catfish and a dead carp. Like already noted, all dead fish were last than 1 lb.

That fish in the last picture was a slob. Great job.

That doesn't sound to good Randy. I hope the water cleans up. It looks like you been catching some good fish. Have they found GA down stream in any of the other lakes? Whitney??

I see they have been letting lots of water go (7500 cfs) since about 5:00 p.m. yesterday.

Do you think that might help mix in some fresh water?

75 and sunny today should help the blue and green algae grow and hopefully oxygenate the water a little. The better the blue and greens grow the harder it is for the golden algae to choke out the water right?

Also some fresh water from rain in the forcast tomorrow should help a little too.

Lets hope for no more cloudy days this month!

Just saw this from parks and wildlife current bloom status site.

March 22, 2010 Brazos River Basin (Possum Kingdom Fish Kill)

Brazos River Basin (Possum Kingdom) A golden alga bloom and associated fish kill were reported in Possum Kingdom Reservoir on the 18th of March. Ten different locations were sampled within the Reservoir and all locations had high densities of golden alga cell counts, most with high levels of toxicity and P. parvum was the dominant algae in all samples.

Texas Parks & Wildlifes Kills and Spills biologists investigated all sample locations for dead or dying fish. At the time of the investigation only three of the ten sites had no dead or dying fish present. The biologists talked with a fishing guide who showed them some stripers that he had caught on Neely Slough that Thursday (the 18th). According to this information we can discern that on the 18th some fish were still able to find refuge from the toxic water.

Lets keep our fingers crossed guys and pray for those water temps to rise quickly.

When I was out there on the 13th I found a large bass floating in the water off my dock i grabbed it and took a pic that i will load later. I have no idea why the fish died buy it was a nice fish. I didnt notice too many shad floating or small cats but Randy is on the water way more than most people.

Come on Sunshine!!!!!!

I don't think so but I am not sure, I would think that the parks and wildlife would have it posted at all the ramps if that were the case.

PiePuncher the kid in the blue Lowrance hat and flame shirt is Connor "I got one" Wood. He is having a good wardrove day. He is the #1 cause of sand bass deaths on PK. flehan GA does not hold a candle to Connor.Brady Wood is the little guy on the right. Patrick is my red headed nephew. Andrew is Marks son.
