Put the canoe in at Pops place this morning. Water is very low, but very accessible for canoes or kayaks. And it's very very clear. So much that I just floated downstream until I saw white bass. About a quarter mile down at the first bend I saw a couple whites. They hit hard all day. Caught around 50 and kept 23. With the clarity you could see the fish follow the jig, hit it, and then you could watch the whole fight as 4 or 5 other fish followed. There were white bass everywhere. 4 or 5 fish groups swimming and splashing throughout the shallows. It appeared to be several smaller males following a large female. Saw this all day. Couldn't get the big females to hit, but finally caught one. As it turns out after cleaning all of them, all 23 fish were males. The males were full of milt. So much that at first thought one would think they were full of eggs. Anyhow, it was a fun day. Not sure what part of the run they are at, but looks to be all males there right now. It's 8 bucks to launch at Pops Place. Ya'll get out there and catch some fish.

These fish were thicker than the fish from the Nueces or Guadalupe. Very healthy.

Great post! Right down the road...

I had no luck at Rebecca Creek last week, I was fishing the trees for crappie but nothing. I am going to give this a shot. Is Pops the only place to launch a kayak up there?

It's the only public place that I know of, and it's the closest to where the white bass are at. I was also hoping to get in some crappie, but the water is to low this year. I saw why some areas were good crappie spots last year. For the first mile and a half, the river looks like the Medina at Bandera. Really shallow.

The river looks like you could walk it if you wanted to. I wonder how you can get them females to bite. Anyways, it must have been fun chasing 'em down like that. I may have a roadtrip in my future. Thanks for the report!

You could easily walk to where the whites are at. And they will probably move up even further, closer to Pops.

i came up from the down river side in my boat and it is shallow. Could only get to the RV park campgrounds. real slow yesterday...only caught two. talked to a guy in a pontoon who had spent the night on the river and he had a few but more cats were being caught than whites. Maybe the winds and clouds slowed the bite.

They were thick in that stretch just up from the RV park. I only caught a couple down near the RV's.

Just got back. Way too swift after the rain. Put the kayak in and went down a little ways -no luck. Lots of work getting back to pops. The wind was miserable.

I paid inside and the lady said it was only $5 to launch the kayak and park.

Really? They got a bunch of rain? Was the water murky? Anything other than crystal clear like the other day?

That was a fast moving system, I know I was in a cabin up at the lake when it went through.

It dumped a lot of rain but only in a short amount of time, so there will be an ever so slight rise and some murky water that shouldn't last but a couple of days.

Just one more cast!

It wasn't muddy but is was not crystal clear either, you couldn't see the bottom except in very shallow water.

I wouldn't call it treacherous by any means but it was too swift to paddle up, I had to drag back up most of the way. I was afraid to go too far down since I knew it would be lots of work coming back up.

Sounds like they got a little water. It was too swift to paddle back up when I was there also. Had to walk and pull the canoe. No big deal though. It was fun going down river though!

Thanks for the report. I fished Medina about a week ago. I was planning on taking my boat up lake to the current of the Medina River. There were too many stumps and I didn't feel safe driving my boat very fast the last few miles. I made it as far as a mile south of the bend at the Lake Medina RV resort. Water in the channel where I turned around was about 10 feet deep. Caught a couple white bass and a LMB in that area, but I only fished the area for about a half hour. Water was stained. I also caught several LMB in the main lake.

I'm going this weekend. Have the crappie started biting yet?

Not sure. I was planning on going tomorrow to the main lake to find out, but doesn't look like I'm going to make it. I'm getting refractive surgery on my eyes in a couple of days and have to get some things done first. I would bet that they are definitely more active right now, and maybe already moving into shallow water to drop eggs.
