Hmmmm--
I think I'll call it a perch!
( I really don't have any idea what it is--I am curious too.)

No fish is too good for the grease.

Log perch! Don't know the exact species, we have several of them in Texas. Including Logperch, Texas Logperch, and Bigscale Logperch.

Very cool little fish either a log perch or pirate perch pretty cool how did you catch him ????? minnow trap. I immediately let them go as I wasn't sure if a gamefish. would they be considered a gamefish and not allowed to catch in minnow trap and use for bait? that said I know many that catch regular perch and use fishing for catfish, I guess that would technically be illegal.

It's not considered a game fish. They're not that commonly seen, and they only reach a couple inches long, at most. Though it's related to the Yellow Perch and the Walleye, other True Perch that are rarely seen in Texas, it's not a Game fish.

Your "regular perch" are NOT perch. They are sunfish, and they are not gamefish.
