All of the crappie talk makes me want to go right now. I noticed there were quite a few fish in the next bay over from the pump house. Saw them on the depth finder and surfacing while I was out hunting last week.

Sure would like to check out that cove your talkin about but I have to wade in to launch off the north shore of the South Pool. Might have to stay on the main pool for now.

The road to the intake was closed the last time I was there about 2 weeks ago. Don't know about the crappie, although they should be biting well with this warmer weather...finally!

yeah my buddy said that it was due to terrorism or something, because of the dam or maybe the water source, i dunno...that kinda sucks for us without a boat frown

Is the south pool the shallow pool at the south end of the equalization channel?

How do you even get there without 4wd?

I'd like to put in there with a kayak but the only access I am aware of are the boat ramps on the North side.

Yes, it’s only about 17ft at the deepest spots. The road is good enough to take a car back there right now. There are no boat ramps only a gravel shore. No problem putting in a kayak.

I just realized you might be talking about the small pond off the side of the EQ. Check Gooogle earth. The South Pool is fairly large.

The South Pool (they call the north pool the "middle pool" cause of the middle concho being one of the tributaries) is a constant level water body right now, and has been for a few years. The water quality is great for around here - the South Concho River (spring fed) being the main source. The out flow from the south pool goes through the eq (eqalization) channel and into the north pool on the south shore by the dam. Access to the south pool is either across the eq bridge and turn south or off R.M. Hwy.584 just east of the South Concho River channel. Gardner Dam kinda marks the division between river and lake and that whole area is very nice - please pack out trash - yours and as much other as you can.

Thanks Concho Red.

Is the access off the dirt track by the bridge over the channel (lot of shotgunners practice there)? If so it looked like 4wd would be needed if there was any rain...high clearance in any case (deeply rutted when I last looked).

I also see a dirt track off 584 just W of Line Rd... will that get me there or is it fenced private property?

Yes - dirt track off 584, go around south end of dam and keep going. 4WD might be helpful after rain.

Anyone having much luck finding whites stacking up anywhere this winter?

The water has been under 50 degrees but still not having any luck finding them "holed" up any where.

Crappie bite has been pretty good and consistent, and we have picked up some whites here and there.

I was thinking about heading over to the south pool and fishing near the South Concho. I'm hoping maybe the water is warmer there since the river is spring fed.
Not sure if the water will be any warmer or not though.

Anyone?
