Hey all...
So I just got back from a great vacation weekend with the wifey and friends from Dallas last Thursday afternoon until Sunday morning. We rented a vacation house right on the water in Lake Austin, just around the bend from Emma Long.. where I fished last year and had the time of my life.
This time around.. I thought it would be great for us to have the comforts of home (the wifey was happier about this than me) and access to Lake Austin/Emma Long waters right in front. Oh and just in case anyone was interested in the vacation house... here's their website:
http://www.lakeaustinrental.com (you can see more pics of the house at their website). Although didn't have the crazy session we had last year.. it was still pretty productive and everyone had a great time.
Ended up catching 11 carp (biggest were 24#, 22#), 2 buffs (37#, 33#), 6 kitties, 1 bass, 1 bluegill. I think I only reeled in 3 fish total, as I basically hooked the fish when the bite alarm went off, and handed it off to my friends/wife for them to enjoy the fight! I have just as much fun watching people fight/land these fish... especially newbies (I'm still a newbie at heart)
So y'all know I like to tell a good story, so grab a cup of joe or maybe a cold beer and enjoy the following... I may add some info that can help newbies, so for you ol'timers.. pardon the basic stuff about tackle/gear/rig/etc.
Thursday March 11th.
So we get to the vacation house around 4pm and here are some views:
there is an upper deck for lounging, and stair leading down to the boat house/ramp.. you can see where I set up my rods/stand in the lower left part of the pic
here's a closer view! I got the new wireless remote bite alarms from BFS and they worked fantastic! Loved the volume control and how it told me which alarm was going off...
and yet another close view... I could fish here all day~ everyday~
so the first afternoon/night we were there, we didn't get anything.. not even a beep.. we did chum the area with range cubes and method balls periodically. My method mix consisted of calf manna, old fashioned oats, grits, canned whole kernel corn, and the occasional flour if it was way too mushy.
for hook bait, I used TresFlores maize... I first used Scopex, Nanshe, Tutti Frutti, and some kind of sample boilie on each of the 4 rods. Once the action picked up... we basically switched to Scopex on 2 rods (all of the carp were basically landed with Scopex only), and Tutti Frutti on the other 2 rods (both buffs were caught only on Tutti Frutti--guess they really do like this sweeter flavor). I usually put 3 or 4 maize on the hair on a size 6 Gamakatsu octopus circle hook. Was using 12 lb P-line CX (moss green) for the main line and 30lb powerpro braid for the hooklink, standard $1 method feeders from BCT, and all BFS gear (Black phantom rods, helius baitrunner reels, aluminum rod stands, wireless remote bite alarms, weigh sling, weigh scale, etc.). I initially casted short, medium, long distances.. but eventually figured out they were hanging out mostly in the medium distances (~50-70 yards probably).
Here's what my method/rig looked like:
So the first night was uneventful.. the alarms were quiet, and we figured the chumming would probably help the next day (and it did). We did hear a lot of carp splashing around everywhere.. perhaps some were spawning?? not sure, but we went to sleep around 2am and the wireless remote never went off (it definitely worked way back to the house)
Friday, March 12th.
So I get up around 7:00am to rebait everything, and get our first run at around 7:30am:
A nice 22# common... hauled in by a newbie!!! tried to have him hold it the right way, but hey, he's a newbie... (I wish my first carp was a 20+)

here's me holding up the carp the right way... hehe
our next run... my friend Mike hauls this 19# in...
