Anyone been on Benbrook lately?
If you give a man a fish you feed him for the day, But if you teach him how to fish you feed him for life.

I had military duty this weekend and flew over Lake Benbrook along with two other aircraft. I noticed allot of boats (7 or 8) on the point that extends out into the water just south of the pumping station and across the lake from Mustang Park.
Several boats were trolling up and down the shoreline at the RC airplane site. But I was moving to fast and was at a 1000 foot and couldnt tell if anyone was catching fish or not.

I was out there Saturday afternoon and met Weekend Warrior and his son out there. The birds were working out from Mustang Park all afternoon long. There were times where you could catch them on every cast and two at a time. All the sandies seem to be growing up this year because all of the sandies that I have caught under the birds the past two weeks have been in the 12 to 15-inch range. Also there seem to be a lot more hybrids mixed in with the sandies (16 to 20-inch range) I caught three of those on Sat on a Strom Wild Eyes blue gill. I just chunk it out as far as I can and retrieve it at a medium pace trying to keep it about 5 to 10 feet under the surface. The hybrids always seemed to come on the outskirts of the school of sandies.
Weekend, it was good fishing next to you. Let's do it again.

Fished from 4:30pm until 7 with my 4 year old son and kept some nice sandbass by Benbrook standards All were caught under the birds outside of Mustang Park next to CowtownHockey 18-23' of water using a castmaster 1" slab on my son's pole and a Humdinger on the other. My son officially hooked 4 fish by himself, but I let him reel in most of the 40 or so caught. By the time he got 1 fish to the boat, I would hand him the other pole and let him reel that up. He slept good that night. Fished Sunday morning with 2 buddies from 7:30 to 12 off the point right outside Richardson Slough. Birds were working and we started the morning in a school of Hybrids. Caught 12-15 of them largest was 6-7 lbs, all but 1 were legal. Those fish sure do fight good for their size. Stayed in that area all day finishing with 70-80 sandies to boot. Took home enough sandies to clean and let the hybrids and most of the sandies back to fight again. We were catching on just about anything.. Jigs, Humdingers, slabs, spoons. Cowtown, I had a good time, thanks for talking us into following you to the birds Of course I didn't call Jimmye when we got home, I went by and showed him what he missed

Weekend, Glad to see that you found the hybrids on Sunday. They are a blast to catch on 6lb line I didn't get to make it out because my motor started acting up on me when I left the lake on Sat night and I didn't want to risk it on Sunday. Steve, get out there while it's hot. I haven't seen Benbrook like this in about 6 years.

I caught it once last year this good....then like you say, it has been sporadic for the last 6, but I will add a year to it and make it 7 LOL..that is when I first started fishing there....Mid summer anyway, we would hammer them surfacing and we would be the only boats chasing them on the surface.....But last year it was real windy and tough, but we got on them about this time of year under birds.
I stopped at the Corp office to buy a sticker and they told me they were not in yet for 2005....that 2004 sticker would still get me in and the folks at the corp gates know that.....funny, I bet they do not....oh well..cannot believe they do not have them yet...
Anybody got one? They said they are not anywhere....

They are speaking the truth. My 2004 sticker still gets me in the gate at Rocky Creek. The Corps office told me that they wouldn't have them in until mid-March, but to call before a came by to make sure that they had the new ones in. They said something about a printer problem? Who knows, the same thing happened last year. I guess that they never learn.

Tons of birds working on Sunday. Caught tons of fish. Saw the good ol' Game Wardens scratching out a couple of tickets to some guys at the boat ramp at Benbrook Marina. Looked to me like the guys had kept alot of undersize hybrids. That is gonna hurt.... shoulda bought a ruler.... Plan to get back out there later this week.
