yesterday on the lake I saw a guy jig fishing for crappie along bulkheads and docks using some kind of jig/cork setup. it looked like he had some kind of tiny casting cork on there. anyways does anyone know what kind of cork he might have been using? or where I might could get some of em?

Slip bobbers. Lets you set the depth that you prefer to fish. It works by installing a pre-manufactured knot that comes with the bobber and you tie it on your line and the cork slides to the knot at the depth you set.

They're called "Bobber Stopper's" and usually packaged by 6, tiny red beads & chart. colored string wound on a small plastic tube. Instructions are included. Add a "thru the float" slip float and you're in business. If you plan to fish "skinny" water (3' or less), a fixed float works just about as good. IMHO

Here's my setup with brain on the main line and fluro or mono on the 10" leader.

Do it like this and you won't lose the whole rig when you hang up. Put on a new leader & jig & get back to fishin'.

I'm a long time tournament bass fisherman that last year developed a great interest in crappie fishing (Lake Lewisville). The crappie should start moving shallow before too much longer and I have tried to figure out what is the best bait to use when fishing really shallow for these paper mouth fish.

After reading the forum and seeing a couple topics about this, I guess the best rig is a slip cork and jig/roadrunner? How deep is the lure from the bobber? Most importantly, how to you fish it? Just cast and reel it in or do you jerk it as your retrieve? Thanks in advance for any tips!

Thank

BigMack,

I use something like the rig you show on my trolling rigs - minus the cork of course. I can easily replace my double dropper loop rig below the swivel should I get a snag. I have several pre-rigged dropper loop setups in a zip lock bag in my boat. I pull one out and tie it on should the need arise. Works like a charm!

Any help on how to fish a slip bobber? Do you jig it straight up and down? Cast it and quick jerk it back? Or just cast and slowly reel it in eradactly? Any help please?

My wife and I started fishing for Crappie last year and I'm trying to learn some spring techniques for shallow crappie. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Especially since many of you are MUCH more advanced than I am.

Many times just the movement of the water is enough to coax a bite. If not, after several seconds I'd just make it "twitch". If one doesn't bust it then, give it the slow "twitch, move a foot or so, rest a sec, twitch, move a foot or so, rest a sec." If you're in crappie territory, you're most likely going to get a look somewhere in that action. And, sometimes just a PAINFULLY SLOW steady retrieve will work. IMHO

This rig is exellent during shallow water spawn.
I usually set my leader from 6 to 12" at the most then
set the bobber stopper up to about 3ft. Throw it into the
shore area and drag slowly out. As you come deeper let the
line fall through the bobber. You can stop right by a stump
or stick and let it fall on down to the bob stop.
You'll probably have a fish by then.
This is exactly what I'll be doing at Livingston.
It worked last week down there.
Here is a good way to keep leaders too.

JayDon has got some cool new plastic leader holders and
I picked up 2 of them at the last meeting. Donny picked me
up and shook me to make me let go of them but I'm kinda stubborn.

Wow, thanks for the information guys! BigMack, I really like the way you store your leaders so I might be stealing that idea from you. I'll have to call it the BigMack Special!

Pepop, thanks for the detailed information on how to fish this setup. It seems that everyone uses some sort of Roadrunner jig head with a spinner but I imagine you could use a "hair" jig as well. Thanks again!

By the way, I'm a big hunter as well and I post on another website that isn't near as good as TFF. This forum is refreshing and everyone is eager to help. Thanks again for everything and I'm proud to post on such as great website. Keep it up!

I like brown/Chartruse in the springtime.
At least it was good last year.
This is the Only time of year crappie will pick up a
lure from the bottom.

Here's a funny story from a couple of months ago.
I was digging through the $1.99 table at BPS and came across a bunch of old packages of baby crawdads. I picked them out, having to rumage through the boxes, and went over to the snack shack and sorted through them. I didn't really want to spend that much on so many of them so I picked out half of them and threw the rest back on the table.
When I got up to the register I told the fellow to make sure they rang up at the sale price. He scanned one and it came up for $1.18. He looked at me and said "do you want to argue about it?" I said "No sir". I took them out to the jeep, then went back in to get the rest.
I plan on giving them a try tomorrow at Livingston.
