After going to TFF yesterday, I'm nearly ready to finally start buying gear. I was at the White Bass seminar yesterday and the speaker said several patterns work for whites. He recommended clouser minnows, deceivers, seducers and wooly buggers with #4-#12 hooks, but I don't know if there's much difference between #4 and #12. I casted several 5 wt and 6 wt TFO rods and they all felt pretty good, so I'm still not sure which rod I'll get and I guess it kind of depends on what flies I'll be using, at least that's what I was told. At the creeks I usually fish, all I usually need are 1/16oz roadrunner heads with 2" grubs on them. I think I'm going to order some flies from an inexpensive online source that was mentioned in a post here recently, but I don't know what sizes I need. Any suggestions and are there any other flies I should pick up? Thanks.
Well, you lose one, you rig one.

match the size fly to the rod; example for a 2 weight about a #8 sparsly tied fly is about all you can effectively cast; just don't labor to cast the fly. White bass will hit anything they can see, or feel but sometimes length is important; they'l hit a 2 inch so and so but let a 3 incher alone, so you need a few colors, a few different sizes. The main thing is the fly has got to get down to the fish so it needs some weight; the sparser its tied the less weight it needs, and vice versa. I tie my flies mostly on a #6 and #8 hook and fish a 4 or 5 weight rod, depending on the width and depth of the water. Shad and minnow imitations seem best, although some colors to resemble crayfish are also productive; white and yellow are go to colors with a little flash-p-

First: Relax. Sounds like you are overthinking this, kinda like I did about 20 years ago. Pick up a serviceable rod and reel that will handle 80% of your fishing. That rod will easily handle whites, hybrids, stripers, black bass, bluegill and trout and reds down at the coast. My first was a very good (Sage) and forgiving (slow action) 8 wt. Click and pawl reel loaded with weight forward floating line and backing. First fish was a bluegill. I still fish with it, 16 rods later.
In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

Get some clousers(white/gray,white chartreuse) and woolybuggers(white, black, olive)in sizes 4 and 6. That will catch most anything in any creek in Texas. If the creeks are deep and fast you may need a sink tip line. If they have a lazy flow then a floating line with a fluorocarbon leader will do.

I think the real decision is if you are going to be an odd or even person. So are you a 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 3, 5, 7, 9, 11? I'm an even, although must people think I'm kinda odd. Kudos for going to the TFF!

What Scott's trying to say is if you like fly fishing, you'll be gettng several rods in different sizes over time. Most of us tend to buy all even or odd weight rods since there isn't that much difference when you vary by just one weight. So, if you end up getting a 6 wt (personally I use a 5 in the TX creeks)for the creeks, you'll probably later want an 8 or 10 for bass bugs in the big water, and a 2 or 4 for bluegill and crappie.
Deckhand recommended some good flies. I'd add white/olve clousers and ruddy brown buggers. I'd also add some size 8 buggers to the mix.
FISH ON!!! ummmmm off
