I just got a Garmin 160. If anyone else has this model, what settings do you find work the best when locating white bass. The fish id is turned off and the gain is set to +1 right now.

I was just wondering what settings seem to be the best when running at trolling speed to locate whites or hybrids.

I have a 240, and have recently started
bumping my gain to + 3 if I am in 15 ft or
deeper. This is making a big difference in
what I see.
Good luck MO

I also run the Garmin....Mine is the 168 GPS/Flasher combo. But, I run the gain on a +4 or even +5 any time I am in water over 20 feet deep and there is not a silt line. So long as your water is clear, I never have felt I was over driving anything at that setting, and it does seem to maintain a better picture of the bottom on up at a higher speed. Just watch for noise beginning to come on your screen. If you aren't getting it, I don't see what you would be hurting.

If your water is murky, you will get reflections that looks like a bunch of lines running at an angle across your screen starting at whatever depth the silt line is floating at. They appear to run about the same angle as the sound cone does as it penetrates the water. This in fact can also be useful information.

Also, on up in the summer by kicking my gain up I can find the thermocline.

MikeC,

I tried the gain at +4 and +5 but seem to get a lot of noise. It's probably the lakes that I fish.

A couple of things to remember,
the deeper the water the more gain you
can get away with and not get noise.
you wont be able to recognize fish at
anything above trolling speed.
You said you see noise at + 4 or + 5.
Now that you know what noise looks like,
you want the highest gain setting you
can use and not get the noise (clutter)
Good luck MO
