I fished with a guide on Clear Lake, CA last year during the spawn and he never picked up a rod. He let myself and two sons sight fish all day. Had a great time!

Poor excuse of a guide that would do that. Customer is paying the guide to put him on fish, show him where and how to fish etc, etc. None of that includes and attitude of sit back an watch me catch this fish because it is a real big one. Sometimes guides need to fish to show you what to do and how to do it, but fishing on the bed like that is not the case.

Question fish 4 bass. Is this "guide" still in business? Was he a young whippasnappa or established?

That guide would have a horrible reputation by the time I got through with him. I definitely would have named him in this thread.

Question to him would be whats more important my 10 minutes of fame or my future as a guide earning money once this got around.

Would a guides career not develope with each trophy fish clients catch? If the guide wants to catch fish by himself then he should go out by himself.

He'd have to duck my t-rig or jig being thrown over his shoulder to the big fish and There would be a definite discussion about a discount for that trip.

NO WAY I'm sitting there watching a guide (who I'm paying to put me on fish) catch a huge fish on a bed. Now if I couldn't catch it after a long period of time and both of my arms fell off from pitching into the bed, I might ask him to cast for me while I figured out how to reel and set the hook with my feet!!!!!!!

Was the fish named Missy?

Some people go to church and think about fishing. Some go fishing and think about God.

I was wondering the same thing and thinking about the same used-to-be guide.

I am sure the Bass name was Missy! Lol sounds exactly like something he would have done.

Seems to me that as a guide instructing someone to catch the fish would be equally good?

I don't know I can see it both ways. The guide needs to get the fish in the boat. It means a lot of business. If he's fishing with sticks he should let the customer attempt to catch it, and after trying if he can't he should politlely explain what the fish means to his business. I don't think I'm a complete idiot at fishing but not as good as a guide. I don't think I would have a problem with a guide saying "look I really need this fish, and you are doing a good job, but I think I can catch it. I'll reduce the trip fee by this much, give you a free trip whatever you want just give me a shot at catching her".

When I first started fishing I wouldn't have had a problem with the guide saying that the second he layed eyes on her. I know/knew that I wasn't good enough to tackle a fish that size at close quarters. However, some people aren't honest about their own abilties so it is probably in the best interest of the guide to always let the customer TRY.

From the cusomer side though the guide better be ready for the customers answer to be no I want to catch it. If thats how it goes down he needs to sit their happily and hope for as long as it takes.
