Is there an easy way to tie a jig above the slab without it tangling itself on the line? Everytime i do it the jig just gets all tangled up. Don't know if i'm tying it wrong or what. thanks

Tie a snap swivel on your main line. Then tie an 18" piece of monifilment in the top of the swivel, the same one you tied from your main line . This will make the jig stand out from your line. It never gets tangled in your line. Johnny

Use heavy mono or florocarbon. The stiff line will prevent tangles.

Royce Simmons, Gone Fishing, taught me to make a loop knot by first putting line through jig eye then tying on the slab. Take the jig about where you want it above the slab and hold the jig in your right hand, make a circle with thumb and pointer finger of left hand and bring the line through this hole. Make a circle, loop, with the double line you pulled through the hole and put the jig through the loop three times and then tighten down. This makes the jig stand away from the main line and since it is free on the loop it has good action. This description is pretty lame but you will figure it out - it is hard to describe without a picture.

How high above the slab do you recommend putting the jig? 1 foot, 18 inches, 2 feet? Does it matter?

I believe the knot that MrRules is describing is the "surgeon's loop" on the same website that Strat256 posted.
The "dropper loop" on the web site is basically a blood knot.
I had some difficulty with the dropper loop on Texoma one time. I was working smoking the bait up through a school of stripers during August slab season. It was definitely working well - problem was the line kept breaking at the dropper loop. I was probably getting hits on both lures, and the fish pulling against each other broke the line at the dropper knot. This was about 12 lb test or so.

This was about 12 lb test or so. probably 2 fish. you have to go 20# or more to not break off too often with this type setup. could be a faulty knot.... but my bet is on the 2 fish problem. when we troll for stripers and have a trailer.... we use 20# or 30# trailer. *obviously, with the spiderwires and such these days.... the hefty line for a trailer is not so much of a problem as it was 20yrs ago*
