My wife and I are planning a trip to port oconnor second week in april. never fished there before. I would like to target the big jetties shaped like a beer bottle but any advice would be great. I only have a couple days out there and I would like to put my wife on some fish and myself of course.

I fish there quite a bit. Weather will dictate where. Depending on the wind direction there is usually somewhere around the rocks thats protected enough to fish. As you head out the jetty, go as far as you can and fish the right hand side. Anchor a comfortable distance off the rocks. You want to be able to cast all the way to the rocks but be far enough off that should your anchor pull you have time to fire up. We usually use shrimp on a fish finder rig for reds and sheephead. Freelined or on a float for trout. There may be some spanish macs starting to move in. Take a gold spoon and cast it with the current toward the center of the channel. Let the current take the spoon as far as your reel's line capacity will allow. Then just reel the spoon back in.

Mando,

POC is a great place to fish. The warnings are true, watch out for the waves during the tide changes, they can get big. If they are big, hug the jetties, generally they are smaller close to the jetties. I have never fished inside the jetties, only because I get frustrated fighting the currents. If the tide is coming in, I fish the north bay side of the jetties. You will see a small islannd about a 1/4 mile in from the jetties, I watch my depth gauge and anchor in about 15' of water. If the tide is going out, I get outside the jetties and fish the right jetty. I will use shrimp, small mullet, croakers spanish sardines, anything I can get preferably live. I have caught huge reds, black drum, huge pompano (drags your boat around), hamerhead sharks, spanish mac's and occasionally kings (at the end of the jetty). Good luck and have fun.

My Pop always said, big bait.... Big Fish!!!!
