Is it personal preferance or is there a good rule of thumb on picking rods for plastics, crank baits and jigs.

yes it is personal preference, but generally it comes down to a rods action & flex. Most people will say for plastics & jigs look for a med.-hvy. fast flex rod. For crankin', look for a med. with a moderate flex. Anything in the 6'6" to 7' range should be good for these techniques.

Personal preference. For plastics 6'6" - 7'0" MH with fast or X fast action. For Jigs 7' MH - H with fast to x fast action. For cranking 7' M - H depending on what you are throwing but a mod fast action helps quite a bit.
