The guy at Ranch Hand said he would guaranty a 20% increase in fuel mileage on my 2008 Cummins 6.7L w/6 Speed Auto. He said if I they put the programmer in, if on the first tank of fuel I didn't get 20% better mileage, he would un-install and give me all my money back. I was talking to my barber who has an older dodge, and he said if I put the programmer in, he would guaranty that I will lose either the turbo or torque converter or both, within 50K miles. Does anyone have experience with this issue? I'll put up with the 15-16 mpg before I spend 10K on rebuilding the turbo and torque converter.

Don't know that a programer will hurt your turbo but it will in time eat up your converter. Depends on the tune that you run with the programer, trying to run a +75 to 150 H.P. tune on stock will not last any time at all. Most programers have a stock to + 40 H.P. setting that doesn't hurt your truck just helps out with deletes and power increases. Go to cumminsforum.com and read all about what's going on with our model of trucks. Tons of info for ya!

Turbo, possible Torque Converter, tranny: possible
the reason I say possible is this: Lets say you install a tuner and can't keep you foot out of it, towing a load you stomp on it while climbing a hill, your EGT's (exahust gas temp.)are going to rise and if it gets hot engough do damage on the exahust side of the engine.
Too much power will tear up the tranny....just a question of when. keep you foot out of it and it will last longer. A buddy of mine has a stock 6.7 liter like yours, but he hot-shots with his. He lost his tranny at 130k miles....
In order to get the fuel milage you want, not only do you need a tuner, but you will need a DPF delete kit. They do make a tuner that is DPF friendly, but you won't see much of a milage increase. I am not sure about the 6.7, buy my Duramax burnes 3 to 4 gallons of fuel to do a re-gen, which takes place (depending on your driving habbits) about 350-400 miles
Like I said in my other post, once I run out of warranty, or find a dealer that will honor my warranty, I am pulling that DPF off and installing a tuner!!!!

The guy at Ranchand was talking about an economy programmer and from their website it appears to be a Bullydog. I would think that an economy programmer would not boost HP much. I think I'll just put up with the MPG until I know more about everything.

Ive got an 07.5 with the 6.7 with the Black Maxx tuner made by H&S Performance. There a web forum you can visit called Cummins Forum, lots of info there. Most recommend staying away from the Bully Dog products for the 6.7, they have a bunch of problems. Smarty or H&S Performance is the way to go.
I have not hand calculated my mileage yet but it is definitely a lot better and power, its like a whole new truck.

like Poorboy said , it is all about how you drive it ..
my 01 2/4 dodge has had a "programer" on it for 80k. no problems yet 130k total) I pull with it set on tow , run empty at full power.. gets a lot better milage on hi-performance..
but I respect my transmission and tires with my driving.. also it has tranny temp/egt/boost guages drive/pull by guages..engine can put out enough pwer to destroy itself ,and the tranny

just get the DPF delete program and a mild tune. This will keep you from over boosting, and overpowering your tranny. You will still need to monitor your EGT's and keep your foot out of it with a serous load.
