Does anyone use a plain marabou jig (1/16 or so) for crappies anymore and what color? Maybe Im old school but Im never hearing anyone talking about Maribou jigs only roadrunners or tons of different plastics or minnows.

Not a dumb question. Lots of people still use them. I tie my own now, though I also use buck tail. Favorite color is anything with chartreuse combo or all chartreuse. Black/Chartreuse is popular. Many like some combo with pink also. Then there's always Blue/White(eric).

I think it's because the maribou jigs that you buy now a days aren't very good quality. At least the last few that I bought were about 3 or 4 years ago. The chenille comes undone, the hookeye is painted over, the feathers come out and are poor quality. Maybe they had always been that way and I just started using a better product or maybe not. Anyway, that's why I don't use them. Plus I like hackle jigs better than maribou.

I tell you over the years when I used to use them, Ive caught quite a few Bass and other fish on these by mistake. You know the old saying "anything hits a jig". Man is that a trueism. Even though these work...I bet Crappies like the small tube alot better. Agree?

No such thing as a dumb question. I think that although marabou "breathes" better, because of the "construction" of a hackle feather, you get the breathing motion and it stays straighter thus more lifelike, IMO. I used yellow Doll Flies for years with good results but like Greg_G said, I like hackle better.
