Does anybody know that trick that removes a hook from lets say your leg? I remember seeing this on TV along time ago. I know it involves using monofilament line. A buddy of mine and I went fishing sat. morning at Joe Pool. He was casting out a crank bait when all of a sudden I hear him say “Oh S*#t I just hooked my self”. He caught him self around the ankle area. Sad thing is we were having a good time until this happened. We were forced to leave the lake early.

You can purchase a small kit that contains the contents and instructions. This way you don't have to remember until you need it.

I had to do it yesterday. I was on Cedar Creek with my son. I flipped a small crankbait bass into the boat and the next thing I knew I had a hook embedded past the barb in my thumb. I cut the other hooks off with some cutters, and had my son apply downward pressure on the hook shank while I yanked on a short piece of monofilament which I'd placed through the hook bend. Fortunately it came out on first try and we got back to fishing. I put a post about it in the bass fishing section, and from within it someone provided a link to yet another post which included diagrams on the technique. I now know first hand it works!

All you need is some fishing line and a buddy that you can trust.

I was striper fishing on lake Whitney back in 91' with my two brothers. I had a magnum rapala saltwater trolling lure on a rod and it had been in the horizonal rod holders in the deck boat we were in. I'm running the trolling motor up front barefooted. Long story short, the rod ends up on the deck and I kick one of those big trebble hooks between my toes straight in to the bend.

Son! That'll wake you up in the morning! frown

I started barking orders to my brothers.

Cut that lure off the rod.

Tim strip off about 6 feet of line off that rod.

Pat, get the needle nose and get that split ring off that hook.

Alright now Pat! You fold that line in 1/2. Now fold it again and loop it over the shank of the hook.

Now Tim! You hold the eye of that hook against the ball of my foot.

Now Pat, you put some slack in that line and jerk it like you're trying to set the hook on a 15 lb bass and if the line doesn't break, you had better get that hook out in 1 try or you'll be swiming back. On 3!
1....2....3!

The Hook just pops out and the blood starts flowing. I hopped around the boat for a while and swished my foot around in the water then got back on the trolling motor.

Tim says, "Ain't we going in" confused

I says, "Heck no the fish are biting." cool fish

Tim says, "Damn Rambo!" shocked

So there you are. Just get a strong line around the bend of the hook, hold the hook eye down and snatch that puppy out. Trust me, it feels better than leaving that hook in there.

uh, exactly how much line does you friend leave out when casting to be able to hook his ankle? Either that or does he cast like the guy on the X-Rap commercial? laugh

The last time I needed the info, we opted for surgery on the boat. Saltfork provided the super sharp knife, while my other buddy in the boat made a nice incision over the barb. The hook came out without too much pain, as Saltfork retreated to the other end of the boat. As he saw the color leaving my face, he feared what might follow, and didn't want to join me. laugh

This site has instructions for hook removal from humans.

Actually I just talked to him this morning. He wasn't casting. He was trying to set the hook, but the lure was to close to the boat.

It's all an issue of Ta Da! physics. laugh

A barb works on a fish hook only if there is contact between the back edge of the barb and 'soft' tissue. If there is no contact then the barb has nothing to get a 'bite' on. The trick with the line requires that force is applied to the hook such that the back edge of the hooks barb is being forced in the direction that is away from the hooks shank, and thus away from the 'soft' tissue that it would normally 'bite' into.

There is a little more to it that what I've just outlined above. Still in essence you're pulling the hook in a way that 'raises' the point of the hook 'above' the hooks barb, and forces the hook 'down' with the barb edge moving away from contact with 'soft' tissue.

Texdawg,

Completely painless unless the one jerking on the string just gives it a light tug. Then the hook doesn't come out and you get the wonderful sensation of feeling like you were hooked again.
As long as it is a sharp fast and committed pull, all you will feel is the feeling of relief that the hook it out. Much like getting a splinter out of your hand, as soon as it is out, relief is instant. By the way, this works on treble hooks where you have two of the three hooks in past the barb, just make sure you put the line around both bends of the hooks before jerking.
