I need a new line for my TiCr 5 wt. I had an Orvis line on it that I liked OK, but it wore out. I put a Cortland 333 line that I had laying around on (picked it up for $5 a while back) but it feels horrible!

I was hoping to get some suggestions on a good line for a fast 5wt. I will be throwing small-medium sized streamers mostly with it. I have always used a 5 wt line, but I was wondering how a 6wt might feel, the 333 feels to light for this rod.

I put SA Lefty Krh Signature 6 weight on my 8'6" 5wt.St Croix and and its quickly becoming one of my favorite set-ups. I go a size larger on all my rods

I would recommend the sa extreme distance line or the rio streamer tip fly line. If the wind is light both lines can cast 90-100 feet with that rod. Don't really understand why you'd want to overline a fast rod. Overlining it will just slow the rod down.

Picking a favorite line is a personal preference decision, but I don't like the TiCr to be uplined. That is a real fast rod with a soft tip. The soft tip allows that rod to load at shorter casting distances without needed to upline.

If you are not in too big of a hurry to get a line, bring the rod to Fly Fish Texas on 3/13 in Athens, and we'll find some different lines for you to test cast on the rod.

That's a great idea from Rex. Remember also that TFO will be there with a lot of different lines to cast their other rods and I'm sure they'd be happy to help you. But then, that might have been what Rex was talking about.

I was looking at that SA Lefty Signature line before, because it is only $39 and I have never known him to endorse a bad product.

The SA Expert Distance looks good also, but I am wondering if it would be worth the $ since it is almost double the cost of the Lefty Sig.

I don't think I want a sink tip like the Rio Streamer. I think it would be great fishing for Sandies and Stiper in the lake, but I like to fish poppers with this rod also.

You only buy a distance line if you are going to throw small flies over 70 feet REGULARLY-- like bonefish sized flies. Or if you're going to mess around on the grass.

There is no such animal as one line for all purposes but you're better off sticking with that other line if those are your choices.

Two different lines, one floats, one sinks....and overlining doesn't slow the rod, just causes it to load a bit faster, no differnet then adding ten feet to the overhang when you false cast


And about Lefty endorsing bad products, google "Donny Beaver"

Those aren't my only choices - they are just suggestions that people posted. What would you suggest as a good all purpose line?

On the TiCR: Put a SA Headstart on it and yer set. Its basically a 5wt bass bug line built to Mastery standards for 30% less money.

"But I don't want a clunky bass line"? Make your leader longer and you get presentations like a "trout" line.

Its already a 1/2 wt heavy, so buy the 5. You bought a TiCR cuz you wanted a fast rod. Don't go mushing it up with a 6wt GPX.

yes i am well aware that one line floats and one is an slow sink intermediate tip.....he says in his first post he like throwing streamers. a slow sink tip normally works pretty good for streamer fishing.

over lining a rod will slow it down.
loading a rod has to do with how much weight is out past the tip of the rod. the lines head design has alot to with this.

lines that are designed to load the rod for short cast have shorter heads normally in the 30ft range. these shorter heads work great for short cast but are hard to get distance out of.

lines that are designed to load the road for longer cast have longer heads in the 50-60+ ft range. these longer heads are good for long cast but are normally harder to load the rod on shorter cast.

it really all comes down to what you are looking to accomplish. yes you can over line a rod, it will load it faster for shorter cast. but at the same time it slows the rod down, not noticable on shorter cast. but when it come to longer cast it will effect the speed ot the rod/line making it more difficult to make those longer cast.

im buying a ticr x 6wt and going to put sharkskin salt water 7wt fly line but should i not...

What are the casting distances you will mostly be fishing at? What size flies are you going to throw?

any distance the further the better haha... flies from small saltwater to larger bass bugs...

bp only had a few in stock and i bit the bullet on the 7wt sharkskin...

The TiCRX is pretty damn stiff. Overlining that one makes a bit more sense to me. I don't think the saltwater line is overheavy either.

And if you're wading or kayaking and thus not seeing cruising fish until they're within 60', a close casting set-up ain't foolish.
