Hey New2Dis

I've tried to get a rant festival started by bringing up how non native trout strip our native stream of part of the winter season's food base.

Most I got was a Woohoo ! for the non native trout becoming food for the huge non native stripers feeding below some of our best river's huge non native dams - and no one put it exactly like that...

Plus I have to pay taxes for the privilege of said non native trout activities.

But some men seem to like the idear. Some others, cast towards carp.

Unless you are wearing a grass skirt and sleeping in a ditch and eating only road kill, you too are part of 'the problem'.

Love hearing about the lawsuit challenging stocking in CA, especially since this is the rainbow's native range.

The rebirth of the American manly sport. When are they restocking? When? When? Where? Are you ready for combat fishing?

It is quite interesting to hear how the fisheries department would poison entire watersheds to kill off everything there in order to make room for the trout.

Personally i don't have as much a problem with them being introduced to systems where they are unable to reproduce and eventually become food for larger predators, but the fact that they have been infiltrating the habitat of native species of trout like the cutthroat, brown, and brook trout is pretty sad.

I'm really sorry I missed this discussion. Diane Rehm runs maybe the best show on radio, and I bet this one was especially great.

Jackmack.. i posted a link to the audio.. you wont be able to call in, but the discussion is quite enlightening and has really helped me understand the evolution of American fisheries management.

one point that stuck with me was that if they are going to introduce these rainbows in some of these rivers and creeks, they need to go all the way and make them great fisheries rather then mediocre ones that require constant stocking.

I was referring to the Book " An Entirely Synthetic Fish: How Rainbow Trout Beguiled America and Overran the World "

Its interesting that the name of that book came from a proponent of the rainbow trout who was very proud of their ability to breed them so successfully.

Amazing how over a generation or two the perspectives change and a phrase like "an entirely synthetic fish" can become so off putting, when at the time it was seen as a triumph of human ingenuity.

Some also consider having a Starbuck in every corner as a triumph of human ingenuity. grin
