Cabin fever has been getting the best of me.....Here is a prototype (at least for me....I am acutely aware of the fact that there are damn few original ideas in the world of fly tying) of what I hope will be an effective worm fly. The one in the picture is tied on a 3/0 hook to give you an idea as to the size. The tail is Polypropylene macrame cord with some Rainey's cylinder float foam stuffed into the tip of the tail. The body is angora goat dubbing...but obviously anything will work. The darn thing looks pretty good in the water (tried it in the swimming pool), sits on the bottom with the tail up, and is easy and fast to tie. Poly doesn't absorb water, so the fly doesn't get heavy and hard to cast...so you can cast a fairly large fly without resorting to a 10 wt rod, and the macrame cord can be bought dirt cheap on ebay or in craft stores....

Nice looking worm. What technique did you use to braid it? I braided eight strands of twine several years ago - made a nice two-colored rope. I still have a two-inch section on my motorcycle key ring.

I like that it doesn't soak up water. How does it move compared to a rabbit strip? I also wonder how it would behave if you let the last 2 or 3 inches unravel and whip finished it just in front of there along with using the foam. That might add some leggy action to it.

Who knows....the cord is cheap...give it a try. I was looking for something that could be used in a big (8-10 inch) fly that was castable on reasonable tackle....It doesn't move as well as rabbit strip but is more manageable in the longer flies.

I'll definitely keep an eye open for some of that stuff. Thanks for the idea, Bud.

And a no-braider.

There's your name: Budd's No-Braider (Worm Fly).

Looks like a mighty fine idea.

Barry likes it when we name flies.

Carol has some pretty colours and patterns in this "fly-fishing cord": http://www.carolsrugs.com/fly_fishing_cord.htm

King's Kountry is marketing to us, too: http://www.kingskountry.com/fly-tying.html

A $5.99 bulk bag could probably get most of the Greater North Texas Metromess worming . . . in living multi-colour.

Bass pro has the little corkscrew like wire that the chunk and wind fishermen use for attaching trailers. You can use them with a 4 inch scoundrel worm and cast them easily with a fly rod in the 5-6 weight. The plastic worm stays on the hook; theyre cheep and will catch a bunch of fish. I use a #2 or #4 crappie (aberdeen) hook. Yeah, I know it ain't a "fly" but it turns the trick-p-

Sorry Budd the name sticks. It's all yours unless someone comes forward to claim it. I ordered a bag from King's Kountry to see how it looks. I guess you can't go wrong with 500 feet of yarn. If it gets here by the weekend I will tie one and give a review of the bag.

IMHO you will need something to make the tip of the tail float...I used Rainey's float foam...but any type foam should work....I am going to tie one with about a one inch strip of rabbit on the tail...should have better action.

Gene...the fly in the picture is 8 and a half inches long...I tried using the rubber worm setup you described, but couldn't really cast the bigger worms. This thing sheds water on the first backcast and casts like big wooly bugger. I also found the litte Roadrunner jig heads on sale at walmart. It is just the lead head and spinner blade with a bare hook...tied up a bunch of those clouser style. Gonna try them tomorrow on the river. By the way...I flipped those little shrimp flies out into my pool...the action is awesome...can't wait to use them.
