Avid fisherman Deion Sanders gets nabbed for fishing on private property in Florida

Jet, July 8, 1996

Dallas Cowboys football phenom Deion Sanders just couldn't resist a good fishing hole and recently was arrested for fishing at a restricted lake in Fort Myers, FL.

Sanders, who was warned at least twice, police said, was fishing with a friend one night when police reeled him in for trespassing on property owned by the Southwest Florida International Airport.

Sanders' home is a short distance away from the area. He was warned verbally on May 7 and received a written warning on May 9 not to fish on the property.

He was charged with the first-degree misdemeanor and released pending a July 8 court hearing. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Commenting on the case, Sanders said in the USA Today, "The only defense I have is that I'm sorry, but they were biting."

Classic....

Oh yeah no knock on the cop, I never knocked her... even said she was cute; I know she is doing her Job, I was a little sketchy when she insisted that an officer had talked to me that day and now i was going to jail now since I did not leave the first time! When that was not at all true. I guess she made a call and got that straight though, thank goodness.

just eats me up though, that tons of ppl fish there, i was the one who got the boot...and I was the only out there for months picking up the trash left by idiots...

plenty of places to fish indeed, but man it made me feel bad...like i try to the right things when i break the law lol; and it dont work out.

Main Entry: 2trespass
Pronunciation: \-ˌpas also -pəs\
Function: verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French trespasser to overtake, exceed, wrong, from tres to a high degree (from Latin trans beyond) + passer to pass more at through, pass
Date: 14th century
intransitive verb
1 a : err, sin b : to make an unwarranted or uninvited incursion
2 : to commit a trespass; especially : to enter unlawfully upon the land of another

The law is the law!!! Sign says dont touch, what do you do..TOUCH IT??? Sign says HOT, do you touch it? Do not enter, do you enter? Get educated on the law!
Ignorance of the law is no excuse!!!! You have a fishing license, then you were given a book on the texas laws and bi-ways, YES? Come on, I don't feel sorry for you at all.

I am trying! Can you help me out? Can you define what :Public right away: is in texas for me? Cause no trespassing in my experince can also mean "good fishing" and no trespass on the land....who owns the water? esp if it can be accessed from a public right away? I did not find that in the texas law and by way booklet...

Tongue in cheek fellas, I know I was in the wrong...just venting what was a funny story... and also a bit of warning, the officer did ask me to spread the word , I follow orders, signs ehhhhh not so much

Signs don't mean a whole lot these days, and could have even been placed by someone who wanted the spot for themselves. It has happened.

It's best to abide by the law and not tresspass, signs or no signs, but if you get nailed it's on you and no need to complain about it.

The best deterent is what happened, and it soon spreads by word of mouth, and gives those signs whole new meaning.

Just one more cast!

Wow thanks, that is helpful; so really the rules can be kind of hard to interpt... good info though... I see the words "may" and "in general" and "ambiguous" alot... This is an issue that the Highest courts have pondered for years... but its now clear to me, the cute lady officer who was only doing her job let me know that I need not be there, so I wont... someone else can pick up the trash and NOT catch any fish. I am off to fish some golf course ponds without asking now!

Serious that is helpful, but you can see that it is not as clear as one might think...

all that being said, most of the places we fish have a sign. no swimming, so we go wadeing. no parking, so we use the opposit side where the "Sign" isnt. park closes at midnight, so we move our car and walk.

we all do it everytime we go fishing! your right, if there is a sign, its prolly good fishin! only prob is, if the land owner cals, we are screwed. also, if a cop wants to make it there duty to ticket you and or take you in, they will!

good luck to us all that that dont happen, but in some cases it will!

I fish there all the time man, sucks to know they are kicking people off of it now. I am so sick of these places being posted, all we are there to do is fish.

If people understood what was important in life, there would be a shortage of fishing poles.

Agreed.

The illegal alien (that dumps most of that trash), is giong to go into his "no comprendo" routine and the Lewisville PD isn't going to do anything more then run him off as it would be too costly to prosecute. You can bet he will keep coming back too.

The trash will get worse since the few who were willing to clean up were scared off and all of us anglers will be blamed for it.

I hope you know what you are getting into, if these cops decide to be buttholes...they could confiscate all your stuff, man. All of it.

Were you fishing the North or South side of Hebron? The North side is surrounded by apartments with open access to water so I don't know what they could say to you. The South side has apartments on the backside and new commercial buildings (offices). I have never had any problems their. Were you in this location?
