What time of the year is best to fish for mangrove snapper from piers?

Summer or at least spring as all or most of the mangroves have migrated to warmer water. They are more tropical in nature. Not as tropical as snook, but the same idea. Mangroves also are found around inshore structure (rocks, rigs, bridges) vs GOM Piers.

Thanks for the info. That is what I was thinking. The first time we got into them was last summer in the hottest part down near Palacios. They seem to be like Crappy. Once you catch one, you'll catch a ton.

Yeah Bud, Them Mangroves are a treat. Last summer we caught a good mess every time we went out. Fishing near the Surfside Jetty.

We just found them last summer, and we were stunned! Snapper? off a pier? When we figured out how to catch them, we filled the cooler. We did that every time we were there last summer. I would love to have an Aqua View camera, and use it around the piers and jetties. I bet there's millions around there! I'm going to have to try the jetties at Palacios.

We catch quite a few off the TX City dike starting around the first of June. The South side. We catch them while throwing out live shrimp for Trout. Anyone know the regs (limits/size) for them?

I don't think there are limits on them.

No, there's no limits on them right now. I just keep the bigger ones and release the rest. I only keep enough for a couple of meals.

kidrick; i fish the surfside jetty via boat. At the land base of the jettys there's a big flats area go's out about 150 foot then it drops off to the channel. You can see some large rocks out in this area. I free line live shrimp and come out with Speckled Trout, Mangrove, Flounder. I've done my best there on a outgoing tide.
