Last time I was in Accademy, I bought some "store brand" pet spoons. They were almost a dollar less and work just as well! It would be nice if I could find a store brand hellbender, or have I missed something?

They have Store brand Hellbenders for $.50 less than the name brand.. They have hooks, so you'll have to remove them. Sold at Academy, at least the one by my house (Bryant-Irvin rd in Fort Worth)

Today I ordered Some #14 size (2 1/4inch) chrome Pet spoons. There was a post on here some time ago about bigger might be better. Going to give it a try!

I guess Academy marketing reads the TFF. They were only 50 cents less before my post!

Smallblessing, I bought 4 of these and have had 2 of them fail. The hooks have come off at very bad times, like when I had a hybrid on.

If you want to save money on pet spoons - and who doesn't - BPS has them for $1.69 if you get them without the tail feathers. I haven't noticed any difference in the catch without the feathers.

Whats the reason for removing the hooks? Less snags I assume..... However I have caught quite a few hybrids on the hellbender and not the spoon. We actually had a double on two poles once and when we got them in both pet spoons were gone and two nice hybrids on the hellbenders. Wonder what we lost. Probably two more hybrids since we were using 15# leaders to the spoons and 20# above.....

Your thoughts???

Hey Jason! (brothab)- Sorry I missed you this weekend. Carol, my neighbor, told me you swung by. Yes, taking the hooks off eliminates most snag problems. When fishing for sandies over humps and ridges, that helps a lot. With hybrids in deeper water, it's not much of a problem. Where I was fishing on Sunday, 13 feet dropping off to 27 feet, there is no way I could have done it with hooks on the hellbender.
