This video was taken last Sunday afternoon.

The water temps was 35.3 degrees and the water rose 1 foot overnight. It was dropping when the video was taken.

This is the border waters of Minnesota/Wisconsin in Mississippi River. The river never freezes below Lock and Dam #3 because to the nuclear power plant above it. We filmed about 7 miles down stream of the dam.

Will they bite in the winter time?

You decide.

Great video Brian, they did not want anything to do with that shad. I'd like to see you do that same setup in the Summer, that bait wouldn't last 5 seconds down there. That channel cat (or what appeared to be) was more interested in the camera.

May be live bait might have inticed them?

there were some fellas from up in that area, that were on the original catfish message board (10 years ago) that used to use a huge jighead & snag those wintering flats in the lip ... they would not bite a bait

i have seen flats caught here in texas with part of the lake iced over, on trotline

I think I saw one of them blink. Or maybe it was me.

So when do yellow cats become active?

Most all the data collected by the DNR's that I've read say around 45 degrees they become active. That might be different from when they start eating.

I would love to get a shot of a blinking flat! LOL!

I was afraid that channel was going to grab my bait the little stinker.

Possible. Next time we'll have to give that a try.

I would love to get a flat on film taking bait. Unfortunately the Mighty Mississippi turns back into the Mighty Muddy here in the next few weeks with melting snow run off. Once the ice melts and the barges start traveling 6 inches is all I can see with my camera.

Glad you guys like the show!

I've caught them in late February on Toledo Bend and it was just above freezing. That was on a trotline back in 79 while in college. Haven't tried again since then.
