Was contemplating taking Friday off and heading out to Somerville for the day for some trolling and slabbing.

Hopefully, the Somerville regulars (or even non-regulars) who have fished for whites out there recently will help me decide if its worth the six hour roundtrip to fish it.

My worry is that it's late in the spring and they may have pulled their summer disappearing act already.

But if they're still holding on points and humps, and still fairly aggressive, and the lake isn't flooded and off color, then I'll hit it.

Thanks in advance!

well, I hit it Monday am. caught lots of undersized hybrids, but no whites-- even had a BIG shad hit my hellpet. that was wierd. saw some folks keeping fish.. but no tellin if they were whites or if they were keeping small hybrids. Most fish caught East of Welch and along the dam about 800-1000ft off the dam. was a nice day though. Wish I could Join ya on Fri, but the boss wants me werkin and the wife wants my money.

Capt. Wayne Vinton, host of the SportsRadio 610 Outdoor Show in Houston, stays in regular touch with Bruce Williamson at Lake Somerville Marina ... a straight shooter on fishing reports.

Hybrid action was picking up near the dam last week. I'd suggest you e-mail Capt. Wayne at capt_vinton@yahoo.com, or call the show tomorrow (Thursday) morning between 4-6 a.m. at 713-572-4610. Show hours are 4-6 Thursday and Friday and 4-7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Good luck ...

Boz

Thanks for the information, sealy guy and Larry.

If anyone else cares to share recent Somerville info, it's greatly appreciated.

Their still letting out a little water and the spillway is fishing OK. The main lake looked very nice Thursday morning and we could see what appeared to be large schools of shad cruising the surface but didn't see any whitebass surface activity. There were just a few boats out trolling or sitting around the dam. It was just OK below the dam for crappie and small whites.

I'll be there this evening and tomorrow morning. We fished Memorial Day weekend and didn't do much good. Boat traffic was insane and a huge line a storms ran us off the lake. Should be a little better this weekend.

We haven't seen them schooling either. I'm taking my 7 year old....so hopefully they'll be biting like normal.

Me and my two boys fished Somerville this morning. On the water at 06:00am and off at 10:30am..not a bite. Water was really stained looking.

We tried everything, but live bait, in every spot I have ever caught fish before and a few new spots.

Hope ya'll have better luck!

Cary

Quackhead,
Did you fish the upper part of the lake? It will usually muddy up more then the lower end toward the dam. The area between snake island and the dam is usually the best but excessive boat traffic will drive them down earlier then if it's a quiet weekday. With a good fishfinder and a little trolling we use to be able to find fish most every trip. I've not had a boat for many years now and haven't been out looking for schooling whitebass but I do remember how its done. We are working on an old glastron and should have it seaworthy by July if not sooner. I look forward to seeing you-all out on the lake!

HLS,

We started off at the island by Welch Park trowing rattle traps and top water looking for hybrids, but the wind was blowing a little to much for me and the boys for that. we moved to Apache Pass area and tried another area that a buddy had had some luck at, but nada for us. We then moved to Rocky Creek area and fished around the rock that comes out of the water, still nada. We moved out just a little to the flats off Rocky Creek. Several other boats in the area trolling and slabing, but no one was catching. We went back to the Welch Park area, because it has alway been good to me in the past, but still ended up with nada. The water, even down by the dam, was the color of ice tea.

We have only lived in Rockdale for about 2 years. We lived in Bryan for 12 years before we moved and I still work in Bryan. I have lots of experience on Somerville and the city lake there off Sandy Point Rd.

When you get the boat going give me a holler!
