I've been catching cloned fish over at the local pond. They're all about 7-8 inch long cats with a yellowish underside and big guts. I would say they have flat heads as well. They love crappie minnows.

So I got to thinking that maybe they aren't mudcats/bullheads and maybe I should do a little online research. That was a mistake. From what I can tell, there are Black Mudcats, Yellow Mudcats, and Yellow Cats. The names applied to each seem to be interchangeable depending on where you live or something.

Anyhow, best I can tell I'm either catching yellow mudcats or yellow cats. Eithter case, I guess they are overpopulated and hence stunted.

The local names can cause some confusion. I remember hearing folks say that "perch" are great for Flatheads. Of course, they do not mean Yellow Perch, a cold water fish related to the walleye but some type of sunfish like a Bluegill or Redbreast.

The Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) is easily distinguished from the Bullheads (Ameiurus sp.) by the lower jaw which extends beyond the upper jaw. Both species have squared fins but the Bullheads will take dead prey while the Flathead prefers living prey.

From what I hear those Bullheads make excellent Flathead bait.

8B - that clears things up big time. Thanks for posting! Yep, their bullheads. Unfortunately.
