I have a 225 Merc EFI, if I disconnect the battery cables while it is idling it dies. Should it still run if cables are not connected, does that mean the alternator is bad?

No it will not run if you disconnect the battery. Basically it is a battery powered ignition......

Is there a problem other than disconnecting the battery and it dying?

You can hook up an ohm meter between the altenator and the starter soloniod to measure voltage or use a volt guage between the two.

Might want to check the in line fuse for the alternator. Should be able to get a voltage difference at cranking battery when running and not running with a volt meter.
