Well I have read alot of stuff on here about Falcon. We are considering going there for spring break this year, this is where the questions begin. Alot of people here talk about the dangers of being there, I believe they are talking about the Mexico side. What is it that is so dangerous right now? Is it safe for a family to spend a week down there? If so is the State Park a good place to stay? If not what is a good place? What are your thoughts on hiring a guide there? Who would you recommend? Overall for the guys that have been there what is there for the wife to do, since she could not care less about fishing? Spring break is March 13-21, will the spawn be over or will there be fish in all stages still? Any help will be appreciated.

You might want to re-think spring break in Zapata if this is the case.

Lol, yeah, if you are spending a week in zapata, you better like to fish, because that is all you will be doing! Sorry there aren't any Neiman's in Zapata!

The wife can always spend the day shopping around in Laredo. Or hangout at Falcon Tackle and shoot the breeze.

i just got back and i didn't once feel uncomfortable as far as safety. I recommend hiring Charlie Haralson, but im sure he's already booked up.

I am going down for spring break also. Taking my wife and my youngest son. We will be there Sunday thru Wednesday. I have been down there a few times. They have never been. Hope to put my son on a big fish. Wife doesn't care much about fishing. She may go out on very calm, pretty days. LOL. We are staying at Oso. I like it because it has it's own ramp and is in the middle of the lake. I booked the room a couple weeks back. I have never felt unsafe anywhere down there. May be one of the safest places I have ever been. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Highway Patrol, Border Patrol or a local cop! They were everywhere. Even on the water. Look around, you will see those green trucks all around. If you can't find a guide go in Lake Falcon Tackle. Talk to James. He will tell you what to use and might point you in the right direction. I hope I am not jinxing myself, but we caught fish in many spots on many different baits. Look me up. I will be in a Legend. Pulling it with a blue four door GMC pickup. I'll help you out if I can.

it was good man, first time to the lake - won't be the last. We stayed at Best Western - no complaints there either!

Try Doug Fett, at 419-302-8600. He lives right at Beacon Lodge, and put me on a 10-11 about a month ago. He stays on top of things, and things do change at Falcon, especially this time of year. Steer clear of the Zapata County ramp if you value your truck and trailer's accesories. Launch at a private ramp, pay the fee. Get a Mexican license if you'll fish the Mexican side, watch for nets over there, and don't beach your boat. The most dangerous thing you may encounter on Falcon is the water itself. Be very careful when it is windy! One more thing, if you have the Lowrance Fishing Hot Spots chip, it shows NOTHING on the Mexican side. Get a Navionics chip. Email me, I fish there often, though I am just learning the lake.
