Anybody seen the water in the Guad recently at the Rebecca creek ramp? Just wondering what the clarity is. I'm going fishing somewhere Friday for whites, but want to fish the clearest water. Thanks for any help!

Kyle

That river doesn't take long to clear up, usually only a couple of days and it's good.

I wouldn't think its crystal clear as it's never really seen that especially in the spring during the run as it's been what I call off color, but not muddy.

I drove over to the fishing pier last Saturday and someone had said the mouth of the river was full of trash and muddy, but what I saw was a clean and typical upper Canyon lake looking water.

I'm thinking Nueces this weekend.
You won't see the Nueces clear. Just isn't going to happen, and if a boat goes through it's muddy all over again.

I was thinking of trying above the lake for whites Sat morning, and go catch trout if that doesn't work out. If I'm just going to be on foot, would I be better off fishing near that boat ramp, or up near where RC rd crosses the river?

The water is still fairly cold, so my guess and based on fishing many seasons on that river that they are in a staging mode and hanging in the deeper pools in the river just waiting for those few degrees difference to make their way up and into the rapids.

They can be there, and are lathargic and have lockjaw, but with a few degrees warm weather they can turn on. I've seen it happen from just early morning to later in the day, and vise versa.

I've caught them at the ramp, but if you could get to the main river channel that would be better.

You might not catch many, but they have to start sometime, and being there when they do, that is the only way to find out!

Good luck!

.

I'm going to Guad/Rebecca creek in a couple of weeks.
I'm used to fishing in murky/stained/cloudy waters here
in E. Tex. For whites/sand bass will 8 lb mono work ?
Or should i buy something else ? Lures ? Roadrunners ?

Thanks

6# to 8# line and 1/32 to 1/16 oz. Roadrunners in white curly tails. Also small diving crank baits work well at times in shad colors, and Panther Martin in-line spinners with the bucktail in white or yellow, as well have worked for me.

When they are in there really good you can throw just about anything, but keep it small and on light line and you should do well.

If you can get away with #8 and still be able to cast smaller lures, then go with 8. You will occasionally hook in to a striper and they will make quick work of #6 line. I use 6 and seem to lose a striper every trip. I fish near the trees alot too, so once they get in a tree it's over. Roadrunners work great. Sometimes the whites won't bite real aggressive, and you can scale down to a regular jighead and curly tail to get more hook ups.

Had a guy report to me today that the water at Rebecca creek ramp is crystal clear. Lots of grass in the creek bed.

They will be at the mouth of the river and this cold weather coming will keep them there for awhile. River don't get good until it turns that "river green" color.

Most of the whites are stilling schooling on the main lake. Angler have been having great success jigging terminator pirk minnows and Bagley minnow jigs in schooling whites. There is also a good catch in back in coves where their are running creek.

As an update, I didn't end up fishing for whites last wknd. A buddy invited me to float the tailrace in one of his catarafts and I couldn't turn that down. He also lived on Canyon Lake for 10 years and said he could never recall seeing whites that far up this early, and the recent weather makes it even less likely. I'll hit it up sometime in March, most likely.
