How many people have hired guides to become a better bass fisherman? I was thinking about hiring one to learn how to find and caught bass in deep water.

Hired a guide on Whitney several years ago to target stripers. Went out on Friday and almost caught a limit (with four fisherman) with the largest being about 17 lbs. Then went with our boat on Saturday and targeted large mouths without too much success. Then Sunday went out and used the techniques we learned from the guide. Ended up with four stipers between the two of us with the biggest being around 10 lbs. Without going out with the guide I am sure we would have been skunked and would have had a very disappointing weekend.

Went several years later with a different guide and learned about swim baits. Caught my biggest LMB on a bait the guide was using that day.

Hope you gain some good tips.

I hired David Vance back in 1991. Best money I ever spent. I still go to some of those spots and catch fish every year. Be careful who you hire though. Do some research on who you want to get, some are better than others at certain techniques. Also if you want to know how to catch fish deep in the summer dont hire one in the Spring.

Agree w/ Champion 1. Guides can be very helpful.

several times....learn something new just about every time not to mention it is fun after all these years just to go fishing and let someone else run the boat and think about where to go next and what to throw.

Yep, hired Richard McCarty on Fork several years ago and learned a whole lot of great info.

I have hired them mostly out of convience. However you learn from just about everyone you fish with. Sometimes you learn what not to do. I have always picked up something good off a guide, even when fishing saltwater.

I would recommend you hire one at least 4 times a year to learn the basic patterns of what the fish do during each season.

I will guarantee this. If you hire the right one you will learn more in one day than you will in a year by yourself.

But pick the right one. Try to find someone who has used them. Took a guide on Roberts years ago and the prop came off the tm. Spent most of the day tied up. Just knew he would cut us a break on the trip. WRONG!!!!! mad

I hired one to teach my wife how to bass fish. I had found out I don't have the proper communications skills for such a task. It took a bunch of trips but she's very capable with a baitcaster now. She fishes when the wind is light the sun is out and never before breakfast.

Have used guides probably 10 times over the years. Most experiences were great and in general they all try to do a good job at their occupation just like everybody else. Had one guy on Amistad try to outfish me and my friend by putting himself in position to make at least 3 casts to any spot he pulled up on before we could make one.
Definately get a recommendation.

I went out with a guide named Randy Bennett at Fork one time a long time ago, and I must say I learned more in a few hours than I would have in 2 years by myself. I think if you want to learn a specific technique then you should ask what they are best at. If it didn't cost so much I would go out more often, so if you can afford it you should definitely do it.
