I'd go with a 8'if I did much casting. It's long enough for vertical fishing but still casts good.

If you fish from a boat go with the 8 footer. If your a bank fisherman go with the 10 footer and a 12 footer during the spawn.

I go with a 10 footer when trolling and 8 footer when fishing timber or brushpiles. Jerry is right that 8 footers are very easy to cast if needed.

Try a 7ft Wally Marshell signature series. They are a good all-around rod. You can shoot, jig verticle, and cast with the same rod. Here is the link.....

if you go with a wally rod you would do well to stick with the pro series rather than any of the others..its IM8 and is a much better product..lighter, and much more sensitive.
length is totally dependant on what type of fishing you are doing with it... i couldnt have just one length. i keep everything from 6-10ft in my garage.
just got my new favorite.. 6.9ft BPS Carbon Lite (carbon blank) w spit handle..lightest rod ive ever had...and i have a Croix.
