Any feedback on the reels I should buy for my crappie rods? Spinning or small closedface.

I like spinning! I use the pfluger presidents cause for 60 bucks you a 10 bearing reel and they have treated me well. Remeber though a reel is just a line retriever, the rod is the most important part. Buy good rods and you will catch more fish

I also like spinning rods for crappie. Like stated the reel is not as important as the rod. I have some 8ft jigging rods from spring spawn crappie fishing and 6ft ultralites for fishing from a boat.

I love small spinning reels. Get several cheap ones you can bang around, and a few good ones that you take care of real nice.

I like an ultra light 5 1/2 foot Wally Marshall crappie rod with a small spinning reel that can hold about 100 yards of 8lb. test line. I like the small rod because it gives you more control of your line and lure. My favorite way to fish for crappie is underneath bridges tied to a bridge column fishing straight down with a minnow on a size 4 or 6 hook with a 1/4 oz. weight. Hook the minnow halfway between the dorsal fin and the tail and drop straight down. Fish all parts of the water column until you find the depth they are at. I put a lot of fish in the boat this way the last couple of years. It works especially well on Joe Pool Lake wink

I'm not a chick.

Ditto with the rod/reel; I like them smaller ultralights for crappie. But I use jigs, not minnows; get a few and you're good!

1st of all Welcome to the forum.
coach welcome
We are not like most of the other forums, we mix a bit of truth in with the nonsense.
If you can come to the CAT meetings if you really want to get some good schoolin' on crappie.

Getcha some of Mr. Marshall's videos too.
The way I see it is like this.
The main ways of crappie fishing are
verticle jigging, dockshooting/casting, slip bobbers and trolling.
Baitcasters for Jigging & Trolling, Spinners for the rest.

+1
anything shorter than 8' is for dock shooting and bridges. Vertical fishing, 8-10' is the ticket.
Spinning reels are for casting light weights and twisting line.
