lake fork was stocked in 1978 with florida strain bass. eight years later in 1986, Mark Stevenson shattered the state record with a fish that weighed 17.67 from lake fork. six years later Barry st Clair broke mark stevenson record with a whopping 18.18 pound lunker. 10 years later in 2002 Jim Harrell caught a fish that weighed 16.12 that fish is the last recorded fish from fork that weighed over 16 pounds, why is jim's fish important you ask?. the time span from 1986 to 2010 is 24 yrs in that timeline the record has been set , then broken, and the last recorded 16 pound plus fish was taken from fork. you divide those 3 fish into that timeline, and it averages every 8 yrs fork will give up a fish that goes over 16 lbs or breaks the state record. we are on the 8th year this coming march, so if this pattern continues we could possibly see a new state record or, at worse someone catches a 16 lb plus fish lets hope this trend continues. thats why i say it could be a possibilty. .... side note i am not saying there hasn't been another fish caught over 16 lbs from fork since 2002 jim harrells fish is the last one that i can find with data from tp&w or the share a lunker program

Hell every time I go to fork I catch one over 16 it's not that hard to do.... And then my wife elbows me in the side and tells me to roll over that I snoring to loud. By your calulations your on to something. I hope it's a new state record.

I am Jim Harrell and ever since that day I have watched and waited to see if someone has caught a fish bigger than mine . it just stands to reason that there is a fish in Fork that is 16 or better . The biggest I have caught since then is a 10 even but I have fished Fork consistantly since then . But in the 8 years that has gone by I have seen the ever increase in Tournaments plus casual fishermen increase two fold or more. I think they are there but not the numbers that they used to be . Thus not many caught . Just my opinion , not an expert .

with the swimbait craze... i dont think its gonna take long to see a 16# out of FORK. Capp and I saw the biggest bass I have ever seen in my life last summer, chase a 2# up to the boat... she was one of those that had a bowling ball for a belly and definately over the slot... she had a friend about 10+ with her.... they wouldnt touch anything we threw at them... spent 2 hours with everything in the boat.. nothing was the appropriate size for what they wanted to eat...(BIG!).

I hate chasers. I've never seen one that big chasing though. That would really irritate me.

I have a Largemouth at home....sometimes she lets me go fishing.

Is there a [choose one] record bass in Fork?
1) world
2) state
3) lake

This is like deja vu all over again.

Personally, I believe the next state record is swimming around and will be caught from Choke Canyon. 6? 7? 15#'s in the last year caught there.

FALCON WILL BE THE NEW STATE RECORD BASS, BUT WANT IF THEY CATCH IT IN MEXICAN WATERS? I PERSONALLY THINK THEY WOULD LIE AND SAY THAT IT WAS ON U.S SIDE IF IT BREAKS THE RECORD FOR THE STATE OF TEXAS. JUST SAYING....

++ I CAUGHT DOTTIE ON A BANJO MINNOW WHEN SHE WAS 26.2 ++

I think Choke is closer than Falcon right now if someone is lucky enough to catch it. However, with the number of 10+ fish being caught in Falcon all h$%# will break loose in 3 or 4 years!

There's no worse feeling than having a Giant come up after a stray hooked bar fish hooked on a flutter spoon during the summer time... I think I have had a few clients almost loose control of their bodily functions a few times, lol

i DON'T doubt there are still some state records swimming around in Fork. Not that it makes any difference, but i saw a world record fish in 1996. Fished for her for 30 days straight from mid March to Mid April. She was a crusier in pre-spawn. She is dead by now but there are plenty more like her. I believe that this kind of fish will come out of deep water now. I hope i'm wrong because i am about to start fishing pretty shallow again. there is always some 13 plus fish in the 3 to 8 ft range in the spring but i think the real chance for the state record is still going to be deep on Fork. When i caught Valentine (17 lbs. 4 ozs)she was suspended in 12 feet of water in a brush top. Most of those kind of fish have been caught by now--but who knows? The other 13 i caught was in 6 foot of water. My customer caught a 15.05 suspended in 30 feete of water in the month of September--under a bunch of 4 and 5 lb schoolies. Go figure. I wish i knew the answer but i have to say i don't. Lunker luck to all of you though. It should be a great year for big fish. I like the 8 year data though--that's incouraging and makes as much sense as anything else i've heard. Larry Barnes Lake Fork Guide.

Its like seeing a UFO or Bigfoot..you tell everyone your story and they kinda look at you like,, ummm ok. (no i havent seen either)

But if you ever get the chance to see one of those followers to the boat, it will change your life on Fork. Kind of like Brody in Jaws.."We needa bigger boat"

I got to see one 4 years ago, it changed my life, i continue to always go back to the spot everytime i go to Fork, I know the fish is long gone, but i still have to go back everytime.

I have no doubts the big girls are there.

Larry,

Good to hear from you. It has been a long time. We use to fish C.A.S.T. with you many years ago(late 80's and maybe early 90's).
