Me and my buds be looking for somewhere to go for spring break that involves trout fishing and skiing. I know plenty of places for such trout fishing... but know nothing about skiing or where to go (as such should also be posted on some ski forum... dude). Likewise they know of places to ski throughout the country, but (heres the key) outside of colorado I don't have a clue about places to fish that also have skiing resorts. Time is running out and rates are gaining momentum. Colorado seems to be out of the picture, just about everyone seems to be capitalizing on the break. I decided to come here after much debate thinking there must be someone here with similar ambitions (or just knowledge). I'm really not asking for any honey holes or secret spots, just somewhere to begin that offers the two that someone with outside experience would know of. Help is much appreciated. Here are were some of our ideas: option 1) Gunnison/Crested Butte, Co [OBJECTION: plane fairs too expensive ($340+ as of now), lodging too expensive, limited rooms available (remember its spring break in CRESTED BUTTE)] option 2) CODY, WO [Good Rates! OBJECTION: we know nothing of this area. I have been told there is both fishing and skiing here. I'll have to check up on that] option 3} Ruidosa, NM [OBJECTION: my last defense means giving up on fly fishing and conceding defeat in the argument because of a 2-to-1 judgement]

you could go to broken bow, the trout fishing will probably be okay, but the skiing is gonna be cold, you can wear one of them neoprene wet-suits though.

Utah.
Ski at Park City in the morning and fish the upper/middle Provo in the afternoon or vice versa. Stay somewhere in between. Mormon girls are.....nevermind. Have a great time.

I've been to the CB/Gunnison area many times. Great as a winter skiing destination, but I'm not so sure I'd target it for winter fishing. Didn't really do any fishing the times I've gone at spring break, but the Taylor below the reservoir is definitely fishable. It holds some huge trout but it can be really tough.
Maybe look into Wolf Creek in S. CO and hit the Juan for fishing? Never done this but it's probably doable.

Is break fly fishing anything like break dancing?
edit: Oh. I see now. Spring break, rather than break fly fishing in the spring.
Nevermind.

Ok now how should I go about this. Ok got it. 1) You could fish the Gunnison but my bet is that it is mostly frozen right now, crested Butte is a great moutian to ride* though. 2) Dont get sucked in to that one. I lived in Powell for many year and there is no riding* that close to Cody. You would have to drive to Redlodge everyday and if your going to do that why just not stay in, well, Redlodge.Plus side to this one is that if you are more interested in fishing there is lots of it to do here. 3)Really is this still an option with the other two on your list? 4)Utah I can honestly say I have never done before just because I tend to keep away from the large mormon populations. 5) Wolf creek and the San Juan tailrace would be okay but still some driving involved with that one. My suggestion would be go to Steamboat,Colo. The spring riding* is great, they have a great moutain, and the Yampa river runs right through town. Nothing better than fishing after breakfast, then hitting the slopes, then fishing again before dinner. The moutain is world class, the river is world class. Stop in here Steamboat Flyfisher as these guys are great and will help put ypu on the fish. Good Luck, Derik *Snoboards are the way to go really, two plankers just look silly.
It's more than the catfish would do.

I would look at Breckenridge area and the blue river. You could fish the S. Platte from Breckenridge. I am going to breck and there are some decent deals if you stay for a while. Gunnison wouldn't be to good to fish unless the weather cooperated.

-Perciate the info. This is exactly why I thought posting on TFF was a good idea. I'm just no good at sniffing out skiing spots. I guess I'm just a lowdown fisherman with no attention to adrenaline. or maybe my adrenaline is always high when I fish as so the reason I don't worry about it . -BTW: Our break is march 20-28 should that have any relevance. -Steamboat sounds [majorly censored] awesome! sounds pricey though. Should we look into it, do you know of a reasonable place to stay? We were thinking condos or cabins because they're less pricey for a week than hotels. I am currently surfing http://www.steamboatresorts.com/ for Steamboat info. -I also like the Utah idea. See, that's another place I wouldn't have thought of. I'll google that now. -Thanks derik for blowing cody out of the water. I was suspicious about that. I've been there a few times and I've never heard of skiing there either.

Well if your willing to settle for a little bit of a drive for a bargin you could look for places to stay in Hayden or Craig for less $$. Cody is cool if you really love horses, Indians, and Buffalo Bill.

Maybe, but they don't tow a boat worth a damn. Which explains the lack of any competitive Amish bass tournament anglers.

Try Red River NM..... When we go there, my wife and.daughter ski at the Red River ski area and I drive down the mountain and fish the Red River in Questa and the Rio Grande down the road. Rainbows and Browns mostly 10-15 inches but some 18-20 " are around. Drys I used were Parachute Adams 16-20 and BWO 18. Nymphs should be 16-20. I like Prince varieties and copper johns.
Also, we drive from Dallas and this keeps costs down, allowing for more toddies and new rods.

From Breck you could access the Williams Fork and upper Colorado River as well...
