Ok I have a question. I love to flip. I always peg my weight to my soft plastic. My question is when flippin is there anytime when you shouldnt peg your weight and if so what are the advantages?

I prefer it the other way...not pegging allows your weight to get to the bottom quickly, the bait sinking slowly behind it making it harder to resist. I peg the weight when there is surface cover you have to get through without your bait hanging up in it.

I would say that I would not peg in more sparse grass. But anything super thick I would peg all the way.

I peg when flipping and pitching because it's impossible to acheive a good hookset if my bait is hung up somewhere in cover and the weight is laying on the bottom. I usually don't peg when casting, unless I'm fishing a bluffline or other steep drop structure, because the retrieve keeps the weight down on the bait. I do the same thing when adding a skirt enhancement like the Rattlin' FlipSkirt, except I leave a tiny gap, maybe 1/16" between the weight and the hook. This allows the weight to tic against the hard sleeve of the FlipSkirt, plus it allows the hook to move independently of the weight.

I do not peg, but just because mainly I use tungsten with an instert and havent found anything that I can fit in there to peg with.

I would peg when pitching and flipping, but casting I wouldnt.

I use to peg my weights all the time. Now I barely peg unless like others say I need to punch through something or am pitching in tree tops. The main reason I choose not to peg is I believe a fish will hold my bait longer with the weight attached directly to it if that makes since. IMO

I peg 85% of the time when fishing a T-Rig. Throw a bobber stop on in front of the weight and in the more open water, I slide the bobber stop farther up the line. Maybe 8" at the most. I like to know that what I am feeling is where my bait is. But this allows the baits and weight move around a little more and clack some on the beads.

Bobber stops are great because you can slide them up the line if you don't want to peg the weight, and slide them down to peg without a re-tie. They don't hurt the line at all.

Yes joho I think you are thinking the right thing. You slide your line the loop and just pull the stop onto your line. Then you can slide it to wherever you would like. I use the small, rubber, football shaped ones.

thats one version, and doesnt work well for us bass fisher folk. use the rubber kind on the little wire loop. first, take your line and pull it through the loop about 3", then pull the rubber bobber stop down on the line... now slide the bobber stop up about 1' and tie the rest of your setup on the line. then adjust the bobber stop where you want it.

here ya go. most places carry these VERY cheap... (walmart, dicks, academy, etc)

I agree with the rubber football style. SkeeterRonnie introduced me to those last year, and I have since used only those for my pegging needs.

When the fish tell me not to. wink

Seriously though, I usually start out pegged for all the reasons previously mentioned. You want the weight to stay in contact with the bait when you are in heavy cover which is usually what you are doing flipping anyway.

But there have been a few occasions when pitching to stumps where I wasn't getting bites. I un-pegged the weight and started getting bit. There was one tournament last year that we had a 25+ pound sack and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt it was because we Un-Pegged our weights....

Enjoyable read and lots of good thinking in this thread. I am also a fan of the bobber stop setup...BUT...I use this mainly when casting a worm or creature. I use it with about a six inch slack and beads in front of and behind weight.

For most flipping and pitching in cover I'm a believer in jig and pig. Probably this is because I make my own and so don't mind losing them on and off to toothy northern or muskie we have in our waters. I also am a fan of skirts and don't often pitch without a skirt. When I get down to your country I'll start following the locals around to see how you guys do it. :-)

Catching a fish is great. Riding there on your bike just makes it better.
