I'm a freshwater fisherman, but I'd like to take a trip down to the coast this Spring Break. I'd like to head down to San Antonio Bay, or there abouts, if I could. Long story short, I'd like to catch a red or two and possibly a small shark. I've got a canoe, and can chuck a cast-net, so I can get bait and paddle my baits out. Do yall think I'd have much luck down there? If not, where on the coast do you think I'd have more luck? I appreciate any help you folks can give me.

So you are wanting to fish the bays? The word 'canoe' has me curious. Did you mean that you want to fish the GoM surf and use your canoe to paddle through the breakers and drop shark baits?

Yeah, that's what I meant. I'd be able to paddle out to drop my baits. I said S.A. Bay as a general location, but more specifically, I'd like to fish the gulf side of Matagorda Island S.P., or maybe head down to Mustang Island S.P.

If the conditions are good not too rough you should be fine if a wave comes over the canoe your gonna be swimmng. You should find something to bend your rod not sure if the sharks are in the surf yet.

yes do NOT use your canoe in the gulf, WAY too risky, but u can use it in the bay...get a sit on top kayak if u want to yak baits out. mustang isp is beautiful, and u can always fish on the bay side of it with a canoe..

March and April are typically the windiest months on the coast. If the winds are over 15 knots then the surf will be probably be too rough.
