What makes a hellbender not run correctly and start to surface? It is starting to frustrate me. Is it twisted line, do I need a swivel, or after time the hellbender will become worn and naturally curve off to the right... I am not sure what the answer is.

Bend the "eye" slightly in the direction you want it to run - ie. if its running right, bend to left slightly. Bend slightly and Play with it till it gets right. Also resist the temptation to bend the lip down to get more depth, too much downward bend has a negative effect. Sometimes they just "wear out" and wont run right long after adjusting, chunk it and tie on a new one.

Bend it the opposite way it is running..If running right bend left and vice versa

Wrong size weight or no weight will let it surface. At least that has happened to me.

What are you dragging behind it? I've found if you have to much weight (heavy jig or combo baits) it causes the HB's bill to to tip up. Just stick with a pet spoon and you should be fine and or add 3/4 oz bass sinker to front hook eye.
Razzorduck Better tighten that drag boy, He's gonna spool ya!

Try a DD22 instead...and leave the front hook on. It will still get good depth, and you'll often double up instead of one at a time. Could help you fill the cooler faster, saving gas and money.

can always buy a cheap plastic planer at the desired depth. works great and hardly ever have problems. Ony sucks when you lose one due to a tree!
