I remember years ago the tourney season started in March. Then it creeped into Feb. and now even Jan. I dont understand why.Everyone knows the fish dont bite, look at the recent results, ouch. Seems to me maybe we should double up in April or May and skip the Jan. and Feb. nonsense. Just my opinion.

Ive wondered the same thing. Tournament trails make money off tournaments so more tournaments more money. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, the way I see it the more profit they make the more they can do for the anglers like bigger money or more paid places.

Professional fishermen are simply better today than they were yesterday. We know more about bass and have better technology than the fishermen of yesterday. GPS has changed the way we fish. Advanced lures and the technology we have is superior. 30 years ago, there wasn't a demand for competitive fishing in the dead of winter. The sport has grown, and continues to do so. I think the real reason we see tournaments in January and February is that there is a monetary demand for them in this economy. We as fishermen watch TV and see logos everywhere, and we are compelled to buy certain lures because fisherman X endorses them. If there wasn't any demand for it, we would not see tournaments this early. We are just feeding the monster

In Texas and the Southern states a lot of it is to avoid stressing fish in hot weather fishing situations and vacation time for families starts in June when school lets out. Most series have 5 to 6 events so they begin in January or February accordingly.
This is an exceptional year for combined cold and rain/snow in our region. Wind is another story.. man it was windy the last two years.

Though I like to fish tournys, I am also one of those people that observes the negitive impact that the influx of tournys are placing on the lakes where most are held.
Having tounrys in the winter is one of the most responsible things that organizers can do. Like stated above, it is easier for fish to survive the demands of a tourny in the winter than the hot summer.
In my opinion, we should run our tournys around the fish, not our own needs. Way too many times, our own selfish need for competition is placed over the wellbeing of the fish! Now, weather organizers start tournys in the winter based on human needs, or the fish, I dont know; but Im glad they do!
Also, in TX; alot of heavy sacks come during the Jan. Feb time table. It is usually not as cold as this year and this is prime pre-spawn/spawn time for a lot of southern lakes such as Choke Canyon. I have noticed that people like to catch big sacks at tournys, and a fish with eggs ways way more than one without! It is just this year is a bunch colder than usual, so muc h for Al Gore and globabl warming (l0l)!

Because people down here fish in Feb, and with luck a tournament can get a 4 or 5 day warming streak and show some good sacks.

This year I had a fish stick (froze) to my check-it stick. I like to never have gotten it off the board. Dipped both in the lake till it finaly came loose.
