My wife and I fished with a guide about 8 years ago on Lake Mead, NV. We looked for "boiling fish" as he called it for the first hour with no luck. Then he proceeds to a hole and starts cutting up saltwater herring (he orders it from California)and starts chumming with it. We also used cut up herring for bait and it didn't take long and we had our limit of (40) stripers. Most were 3-4 pound fish with a big fish of about 6lbs.

My question is has anyone ever tried to chum for them like this guide and did it work? It changed my opinion of stripers after that day. Now I think of them as catfish with no whiskers. laugh I still love to catch them but they lost some glamour after he chummed them up laugh .

I fished with a guide in Chesapeak bay before and we chump. That was the only way we catch fish that day.

I chum the same way with cut up saltwater herring when I can get it. I started using it when I guided on Mead in the 80's and it works great here in TX smile

Oh yeah,

That is what those small shad are good for!!

I like to chum then fish a couple of poles with live bait and couple with cut bait.

I disagree about it not being legal. I have fished with guides both freshwater and saltwater, and the all use that technique. I can't believe that a licensed guide would do something that is illegal.

Bluewave Mike, Would you mind letting us know what authority you are basing your information on? Is it a Texas law, or Oklahoma law, or maybe both states?

I emailed TP&W to find out the answer to this question and want a description of chumming from them too. Not saying your not right just want to know where it is in the handbook.

Its perfectly legal. In fact there are no regulations at all on chumming or baiting holes for fishing in Texas.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/fish/legaldevice.phtml

How would they know what kind of fish you were targeting anyway?

I should clarify that I believe its legal because it says nothing about it in the above regulations.

I think Mike must be pulling y'alls legs by saying it's for catfish only.
I saw two fellas on one of the tv fishing shows, a few years back, catching stripers below a powerplant tailrace using chicken livers.
Besides, don't the big stripers wait on the bottom sometimes and feed on the shad that sandies kill?

I've had more luck chumming for hybrids than stripers. When I'm sitting on a school that isn't interested sometimes you can change there mind with some cut shad like shadboy said, small ones.
Unclefish, don't let this detract from a stripers glamour. They are opportunist and voracious feeders. All fish will take advantage of an easy meal!

I tried to post this early, and it didn't take (at least I don't see it).

I heard this "Rumor" about it being illegal to chum on Texoma. I also noticed a lot of people doing it out on the lake (if there is a bunch of birds around a boat they are probably chumming). I asked every legal official around and On lake Texoma and they said it "is Legal to Chum on Texoma".

I even asked the Game Warden while visiting the store below the dam. He indicated that he believe the rumor may have been started by fishing guides years ago, because it is a highly effective method of drawing in fish.

I do it every once in a while, but only when I am bait fishing:). I find that once the catfish start showing up on the end of your line (normally small Blue catfish), then it is time to move to another spot.

I use an overflow bait tank on Texoma. Where I constantly draw fresh lake water into my tank, and I have a hose near the top of the tank to direct the overflow to my scuppers. During certain times of the year, I would swear that this overflow of bait water helps attract fish to the back of the boat.
