I went out to the San Gabriel to check out what effects the rain had on the river. Well, it has gone from the lowest I'd ever seen, to flooded. The good news is that in a few days the water should be back down some, and this should kick off the whites in this area. Small whites were being caught this week before the rains, so when the water clears it should be good. Didn't see anyone catching anything.

Lake G'town is still way low but we managed to catch about 15 LBM trolling today (Monday).
The water is clear. Did not expect that especially after all the rain we have had.

What type lures were you using when trolling? Also, if you don't mind, what area of the lake? Thanks

I launched at Cedar Breaks and took a right toward the dam.
I caught one before the dam then I went past the dam and trolled the other side past the look-out on the right. After
the lookout and the brush there is a steep rock bank on the right. We had 4 rods out and hooked 3 LMB right there.
It was about 40ft of water and about 25ft from the bank.

Most fish were caught on DD-22's but we caught some on pet spoons and cordell redfins also.

Quick question--When the whites start to move upriver n the San Gabriel, do they go as far up as Circleville/Taylor? I used to fish the river in that area before Lake Granger was impounded, and it was pretty good for blacks and channels. Just wondering.

Rudy,

Yes they do go that far. They usually make it up to the 95 bridge there where it crosses the river at circleville. Best action is in march, in the stretch downstream from that bridge for about 3/4 of a mile. I have never caught fish above the bridge, but at the bridge, yes.

Awesome! Thanks a bunch for the info. Above the bridge, about a mile or two above it, there used to be an old iron bridge, with wooden planks for a road floor, and right next to it was a beautiful place, with a huge pasture you drove across, to a giant pecan grove. Under those pecan trees were picnic tables and grills, and next to that area was a permanent building that basically a bar/beer joint! The whole thing used to rent out for company picnic/family reunion type events, and the San Gabriel made a bend right there, with a DEEP, crystal clear pool, then some beautiful, pea gravel/limestone shallow rapids ideal for kids to play in. The pool was LOADED with NICE black bass and channel cats!

For the life of me I cannot remember the name of that place, but it was gorgeous!

Anyone know if it is still there?

Also, does that little general store/gas station/beer joint/bbq joint on 95 next to the bridge in Circlevile still sell that Elgin style hot sausage? That sausage and the brisket was world class grub!

The bridge with wooden slats sounds like Rowe Valley.
I think they left the old bridge there but built a new one next to it.

I have not been there in years.

Man all this talk of Austin area white bass fishing and BBQ has me going insane!!! Well I am off to class for the day (yuck... fishing fever has set in) but I will see what you guys are up to this afternoon. Last time I ended up fishing the San Gabriel for whites I just ended up catching a mess of crappie. Oh well I guess someone has to do it.

There is a new bridge at rowe valley, its been there for a long time now or as long as I can remeber(I'm 20). The old bridge is still there though. I have a place on the river off of 29 towards Georgetown by the stucko(sp?) house. Never really caught a whole lot of fish there though. I haven't been there in a few years though either. Both of my parents are from that area, and have had the place on the river for a long time. I plan on making it down that way for the run this year though.

The store you're talkin about on 95 is the Circleville Store. I'm sure they still have the Elgin sausage. I haven't been there in several years either, but I would bet they still have it.

Sportsman ... glad to hear that it's up .. I was up there a couple of weeks ago. I put in at Taylor and could barely get out to the no wake buoys it was so shallow..finally got going, made my way to the river channel in the stumps and the deepest I found was 7 feet .. cruised at about 8mph .. found a couple of stumps that I could not see and they were knocking me all over the place.. that just kind of made me nervous !!!

So if I were to take off the other direction and go towards the dam, then head up that first arm to the left..how's the fishing there ???

From what I hear, it is back down to low level again. This cold weather can't be good for the whites, but I'll be out there saturday to check it out.
