Every color vanishes at a different depth, i was always told red was the 1st color to vanish depending on light penetration. I have some on topwaters and shallow cranks, but i havent seen when a red hook outfishes regular hooks in deeper water.

The color of hook doesent matter to me, but I have noticed that the pros use red hooks as the front set of their crankbaits.

Never have fallen into the red hook craze. I have a few baits with them on them, but they came that way when I bought them and they usually come off before they get wet.

I have done almost scientific studies on hook colors. The red hook is by far a huge advantage in my opinion.

I occasionally use red hooks as trailers on my spinnerbaits. However, most of the time I am using a twin tail trailer so I don't really use trailer hooks. Anyways I don't really see the difference. I believe it's just a confidence booster.

I use the red hooks pretty much for everything
But my Dad who i fish with most of the time only uses the black hooks.

Some days he out fishes me and some days i out fish him i really dont se where the hook color has made any differance.

The main thing I like about the red hook is that it will bend easier than the black hook which i think helps me pull it free from a snag easier and not break off as much.

The true answer is to use what you have confedence in. No other answer really matters. But from a Scuba divers first hand experience with colors in water, red is only red shallow and will only be red down to how deep the light is able to penetrate the water column. Even in the clearest water, red will only be visible down a short distance (10-15 ft) and after that it will turn to shades of grey. Know fish do have better under water sight and will probably see the red deeper that you and I but that will still vary depended on water clarity and light penetration.

I like when guys in my club say red hooks do not work. Just try putting one on the front of a crank. You will notice that fish hit the front hook more thus eating the whole crank verse the rear hook. Like others I use it for shallow fishing and I know it works. Helped me win three club championships.

Whatever color a bass sees as red (representing blood) is the same color to the bass regardless of the depth..E.G. The color of a red hook at 20ft is the same color(shade) as blood on a injured shad at 20ft..

Finally, someone else understands! From diving, blood does have a distinct color whether you are at 10ft or 110 ft. I have seen blood at both and yes there is a difference, but there is a distinct color to it. At about 20 ish ft, blood actually looks green. So shouldn't we be using green hooks? nuts
